Dear Friends of A Novel Experience,

Oh, we love September when we get to meet photography lovers from across the United States who gather in Pike County during the third weekend of September for SlowExposures. That's the nationally-known juried show (and a dozen other satellite exhibits) that celebrates photography of the rural American South. Yes, in Pike County! And, we are pleased to present a satellite show featuring the work of Memphis photographer Ryan Steed. He calls the show "Went Out for Cigarettes" which perfectly introduces the viewer to his thoughtful survey of the places and sights that can be glimpsed on southern roadways. We guarantee you will won't leave the store without a grin--and, a second thought. Join us for our traditional Show Brunch from 9-11 on Saturday, September 16th--you'll meet Ryan and a whole host of interesting folks. For the complete show schedule, stop in the store or visit www.slowexposures.org for more information.

School is back in session and the weather is moderating a little, little bit--that snap, crackle, pop of Fall is just around the corner. That's when the temp is just right for curling up with a book--we have just ordered a vast selection of titles that will temp every sort of reader. And, we're always happy to suggest a book that will provide that respite from the demands and distractions of technology. Indeed, our book clubs are fantastic opportunities to discover books that you would never have picked up in a million years--and, love! (Try one we deliberated over a couple of months ago: The Wangs vs. the World.) Our book clubs are strictly no-guilt-drop-in gatherings--no mandatory audience required--come to enjoy and meet great people.

We are introducing a new contest--we're calling it "Show Us Your Book Pile". (All enthusiastic readers know what we mean...) Take a photo of that pile of books you have purchased and are just meaning to read as soon as you finish that other one...the stack that seems to grow every time you turn your back. Send us the photo and we'll post on our Facebook page--and award a special prize to the winner!  See you in September! Without further ado, on with the show!

LIVING ROOM CONVERSATIONS: NEXT MEETING: OCT 29
Last month we had a great gathering about all-things-foreign-affairs. We're skipping our monthly exercise in civic conversation in September (we're sure the work in SlowE is going to prompt dialogue) but come out for our October gathering when we discuss "The First Amendment". There are only a dozen spots--sign up by emailing us at [email protected]. We're looking for folks who want to be a part of a balanced, robust discussion on the topic in the hopes of discovering common ground and learning from each other. It's inspiring.

 KITTEN UPDATE from Susan!

Remember that little kitten who showed up behind the store back in June?   Well, there's a happy outcome for him. His name is Oliver, because he was so hungry and was always asking, "Could I have some more, please?" He's now installed as the "little prince" at Susan's house and thinks it's his job to keep older "brothers" Zeb and Charlie in line.
