"Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by... living the gospel of Jesus Christ and to be God's love with our neighbors in all places."

D.S. Reflection

'We are created with a drive to self-transcend, to move beyond oneself for the joy and blessing of others. It is all positive, an original blessing instead of an original sin, sending us toward a cosmic hope. There is something within us, which Christians call the Holy Spirit, that makes us aware that we are here to co-create with God and make something beautiful of the world.' (Richard Rohr)

What better time than summer in our four New York counties to celebrate our co-creation with God of a beautiful world. A camper builds a perfect fire; a gardener picks a shining summer squash; an outfielder throws a strike to the plate; a fly fisher hits the exact spot.

So many beautiful moments, surrounded by the diversity of wildlife, the surprising rainbow, the deep green wooded hills, the steady river, and all of the other scenes of beauty that only God could dream up.

Surely it is possible to see much in our world that is not beautiful. Every day we can see the effects of greed and prejudice and conflict. As followers of Jesus we know that we cannot turn away from the pain and struggle in the world.

But praise God! we are also given glimpses of beauty - more than enough to 'send us toward a cosmic hope.' And more than that - we are co-creators! Makers of beauty for each other.

May this be a season of beautiful summer moments that remind you again and again that God is good, all the time. And by God's grace, a great new day dawns. And your kindness, your peace-making, your hope, your faith - co-create this new day for all of us.

Bless the Lord, O my soul!

Everett

Does your church have a Medical Emergency Response plan in place in the event that a member of your congregation has a heart attack while attending a service or event at your church?

It can often take upto 15 minutes forEMTsto respondtoour locationin an emergency.  In the caseof a heart attack, anindividual cannot waitfor10-15 minutes toreceive medical attention.

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can greatly increase the rate at which an individual survives a heart attack.  As AEDs are expensive, The Conference is interested in learning how many churches might potentially be interested in purchasing one-if many are, we may be able to obtain a group rate.

Please  click here and take a couple of minutes to fill out this electronic survey so that we may be able to gauge interest.

Click here to read letter from the Rev. Larry Wilford and the Rev. Bill Mudge to learn more about AEDs and the need for a Medical Emergency Response plan.

Do local church prayer requests violate HIPAA?

HIPAA, stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a federal law passed in 1996. Generally speaking, the HIPAA Privacy Rule does not apply to churches' disclosure of health-related information unless certain information is revealed about church employees (or dependents) who are covered by the church's health plan. However, it is important to realize that there could be potential legal liability around the issue of publicizing prayer requests. The General Council on Finance and Administration of the United Methodist Church recommends for local churches to follow these procedures for their own protection when publicizing prayer requests:

Consent, Consent, Consent! Get consent from the person you are praying for. If the person is unable to give consent, obtain the consent from a close relative or friend of the individual.
Less is best. If a church does not have consent, the less you reveal is the best approach. Some churches have adapted an approach that largely avoids this problem by letting someone else (besides the church) disclose details about an individual's medical condition.
Follow the Golden Rule. If the individual you are praying for is incapacitated, ask yourself,
    1) Would you care that information was disclosed without being able to give permission?
     2) Would you prefer the church at large or a close family member or friend to pray for you?
    3) Would you be embarrassed if information was publically disclosed?

For more information about HIPAA, visit www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa.
Editor's note: This information was obtained from the General Council on Finance and Administration of the United Methodist Church's 2004 Memorandum, entitled HIPAA Privacy Rule and Local Churches. This article was printed in UNY Advocate, 2017 Issue 2, Pg 17.

New Blog Series: UNY Conference Trip to South Korea

Almost immediately after Annual Conference 2017, Upper New York Area Resident Bishop Mark J. Webb, several members of the UNY Cabinet as well as other leaders in the UNY Conference, and many of their partners or spouses traveled to Bupyeong, South Korea from June 6 to June 14.

The Rev. Eun Pa Hong invited Bishop Webb and the UNY Cabinet to visit his church in South Korea. Rev. Eun Pa Hong feels one of the main ministries of his church is to introduce Americans to the way that Korean Methodists worship the Lord. He has invited several United Methodist Conferences across the world to his church. All expenses except for travel to and from South Korea were paid for by the Bupyeong Methodist Church.

In this blog series, you will read what some of the UNY visitors took away from their experience in South Korea. Click here to read the introductory blog.
