Hello everyone, 
It's the last week of August as I write this and fall is in the air. I hope that all of you enjoyed summer in special ways away and that you feel rejuvenated. Regina is still experiencing hot dry weather but the nights are cool, leaves are changing color, and I've been raking a bunch up in our back yard for the past few weeks. I wanted to share a photo I took in early August of a misty morning view of Wascana Lake and downtown from my office window.

Cree and an author visit to a few PNLS libraries by Louise Halfe! SLA staff and volunteers also adjudicated Culture Days grant applications. Libraries had some very interesting projects and and ten lucky libraries were selected for a $300 grant. The 2018 Saskatchewan Libraries Conference Planning Committee (CPC) Executive has been meeting regularly. Alix-Rae Stefenko, President of the Manitoba Lirbrary Association and Prairie Provinces representative to the CFLA Board, has joined the CPC. There are some great program ideas for a very special week of national meetings, socials, keynotes, and sessions from May 1 - 4, 2018. Watch for regular updates on the conference site.

Michael Shires and Judy Nicholson spent August 14 and 15 with
 the leaders of the provincial and territorial library associations across Canada at the Partnership Summer Retreat. This is an incredible opportunity to network, share information and support each other in times of crisis. Each meeting usually has a focus for the "Environmental Scan" that allows the associations to share their work.
A Partnership Project - Call for Interested Participants
The Ontario Library Association created Live videos.For those who are unfamiliar with them, here's the playlist. The Partnership is exploring the idea of recreating this, but across Canada.
Who's interested in this, and where are we going from here?
In the preliminary plan the hope is to see 10 videos in total split amongst provinces and territories, to be done by the Spring of 2018.
Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in this project. You can get in on the ground floor and be part of the planning or join in later to create the content.
Mark your calendar for Happy Hour on November 2, 2017!!
Saskatchewan Libraries Happy Hour returns for the 4th annual event on November 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m .
All members, friends, and stakeholders are invited to attend - share stories, network, socialize, and general celebrate the great community around the libraries in the province.
SLA is calling for hosts for Happy Hour events throughout the province. Your role - select a local establishment, let them know that you might have 10-20 people show up for an informal event. You will be able to order appies and snacks for up to $300 or about $10 per person that attends. You will send the receipt to
[email protected] for reimbursement. Please let Judy know by September 20th if you are interested in being a host. Mostly it is selecting the site, paying for the appies, and just being there as a host.

 Libraries Matter
At the Wakaw Public Library, patron John Csapo is rediscovering his musical talent of playing the fiddle.
Mr. Csapo generally plays by ear because he does not read music, but he wanted to learn more about technique. So with the help of Branch Librarian Bettyann Gerwing, he borrowed a book that  would provide answers.
After a few weeks with the book, Mr. Csapo returned to the library with his fiddle. To the delight of everyone, he performed several tunes, demonstrating his new techniques.
Mr. Csapo and his quest for knowledge is a typical example of how patrons use libraries to better themselves and enrich their communities - at any age.

: Birth through high school was in southeastern Manitoba, I have lived in BC, AB, and SK as well (in that order), each move was to pursue an educational opportunity.
Early Life
: Professional career and activities: My first library job was as public services librarian at Briercrest College, where I soon became library director. After a season doubling as a copyright officer I received an appointment as student success librarian at the University of Regina. During my library career, I have served on both the multitype and SLA boards. I also have had the privilege to serve as an instructor in history at Briercrest College.

Staffing Changes
The board and staff of SLA congratulate Gloria Bearss as she moves on to new and challenging opportunities. We welcome Calvin Chiang who will replace her and bring new skills to SLA.
Gloria was offered the position of Executive Director with the Saskatchewan Council of Archives and Archivists (SCAA), as well as the Provincial Coordinator for the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating. (Two clients of b-Creative Group). Gloria remains at b-creative Group and will be on hand to train and support Calvin Chiang as the new SLA admin support.
I wish to thank everyone for all the support and cooperation you have given me over the past 5 years. It was very much a pleasure working with you all. I have learned so much from SLA, and will try to emulate the passion that you all have for your association, and use that as a learning tool in my new role. Our paths may very well cross again, and I look forward to perhaps seeing many of you at next year's conference.- G

I am a recent graduate from University of Regina with Business Admin majoring in Marketing. I was working at First Steps Spinal Cord Injury Wellness Center, as their social media coordinator. As Calvin will now be handling the membership renewals and inquiries, and providing support to the conference tasks, you can be expecting messaging from him.
For anyone who is curious, the posting for the executive director position is now available on the SLA website and in the Job Board.
Judy Neufeld was only 19 years old in 1976 when she was hired for a position at the Wapiti Regional Office in Prince Albert, SK. Since then, she has worked as a clerk, helping provide services to Wapiti's 46 branch libraries. 
On August 24, 2017, Judy celebrated her official retirement after 41 years. Staff treated Judy to lunch while recalling happy events and occasions from her time at Wapiti. Judy enjoyed the remembrances, but, holding the record for the longest term of continuous employment, could out-remember them all.
Regional Director Tony Murphy, while "thrilled for Judy as she embarks on an exciting new chapter in her life," said "but I'm really going to miss Judy's sense of humour and infectious smile!" Murphy also expressed his "gratitude to Judy, who exemplifies the incredible people who are at the heart of our public libraries, dedicating their entire working lives to public library service in Saskatchewan."

Library in La Ronge holds unveiling ceremony
The Alex Robertson Public Library in La Ronge hosted a special event on August 2, 2017 to unveil a treaty plaque, a tribute to Alex Robertson and a new logo for the library.

A framed replica of the Treaty 6 medal, as well as an image of the adhesion to the treaty signed in 1889, will now hang in the library. Elder Bella Sanderson of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band offered a blessing on the occasion.More information and photos are on their facebook page. Read more

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
