Dear Friend of the BABC,
We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Colin Brown, while on vacation with his family in the Sierras. Colin contributed greatly to the BABC: his leadership, strategic vision and fresh thinking have taken the organization to heights we never imagined. But most of all, his friendship, collegiality and willingness to share himself with all of us is something we will always treasure and never forget. When Colin made a commitment, he kept it. When Colin set a goal, he achieved it. And when Colin ga
ve you his word, he meant it. He was truly a special individual, and although he left us unexpectedly and far, far too soon, his impact will remain indelible, and his memory will inspire us to emulate his extraordinary qualities and kindness to others.
It is our honor to pay tribute to Colin by supporting those he loved and cared for so deeply - Malini, Callum, Euan and the entire Brown family. If you would like to offer your condolences to the Brown family, we have set up an email, [email protected] for you to do so.
We will also be holding a celebration of Colin's life, so please join Malini, Callum, Euan, their family and our community at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 14th, 2017, at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco to celebrate Colin's life, honor him for enriching our lives, and say our goodbyes.
On August 30th we had the Summer Euro Networking evening. The evening was kindly hosted and sponsored by Giants Enterprises at the stunning Club level of the AT&T Park, and featured a raffle with prizes donated by Norwegian Airlines and the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018. Congratulations to those who won!
The event was our largest to date and provided the attendees with the opportunity to connect and network with the incredibly diverse European-American business community in a relaxed and professional atmosphere.
We also have our much-awaited Clash for the Ashes tournament coming up on September 9th at Piper Park in Larkspur. Join us in enjoying a great day out in front of a backdrop of beautiful Mount Tamalpais for all the family with an Aussie-Style BBQ lunch, fine British and Australian beverages and games at half time. This year it's anyone's guess who will win. So, come on down and cheer on your team!

Last month, Home Secretary Amber Rudd visited the Valley to have discussions around online terrorist content with the major tech companies. While here, she also spoke at the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism - a grouping developed by industry, for industry to fight this growing problem.
Her visit was a chance to continue the dialogue with the key players initiated by the Home Secretary following the horrific attacks we saw in the UK earlier this year. We know terrorists will use the internet to spread their vile ideology and to inspire and plan their acts of violence. We need to work with the major technology companies - who are clear this sort of content has no place on their platforms - as well as the groups such as ICT4Peace and the relevant UN bodies to tackle the issue.
The Home Secretary also took the chance to be clear on another digital security issue, namely encryption. The British Government is committed to making the UK the safest place to operate online, and that needs to be underpinned by strong security. My own experience working on cyber security was part of the government's significant investments in this area over recent years, including the UK's new National Cyber Security Centre.
Encryption plays a fundamental role in protecting us all online. It is key to growing the digital economy, and delivering public services online. But the inability to gain access to encrypted data in specific and targeted instances - even with a warrant signed by a Secretary of State and a senior judge - is right now severely limiting our agencies' ability to stop terrorist attacks and bring criminals to justice.
To be very clear - Government supports strong encryption and has no intention of banning end-to-end encryption. This is not about asking the companies to break encryption or create so called "back doors". It's about working together - through mature and confidential conversations - so that we can find a way for our intelligence services, in very specific circumstances, to get more information on what serious criminals and terrorists are doing online, while not compromising wider security.

BABC Policy: Statement on UK Position Paper on Customs Arrangements
BABCSF welcomes the UK Government's proposals for a future customs relationship with the EU as well as its aim to explore a model for an interim period that offers frictionless trade across the borders and helps avoid a "cliff edge scenario".
Minimizing any disruption to business through an agreed transition period and providing clarity on the future trading relationship with the EU as early as possible have been a key ask by the transatlantic business community, which includes major American investors and leading British firms.
Both options presented, however, are still likely to increase the burden for businesses who trade between the UK and the EU. We therefore continue to advocate for a model that is as close as possible to existing arrangements. This will be essential in maintaining the United Kingdom's status as a desired trade and investment partner.
Our businesses are looking forward to continuing its strong engagement with the UK Government on achieving this aim.
