for introducing a bill that directs school districts to permit students to use sunscreen at school and allows school employees to assist with sunscreen application in certain circumstances. If this bill passes, New Jersey would join seven other States that have already passed similar bills.
Legislators are motivated by parents who have had children suffer serious sunburns at school events, such as field trips or recess, where sunscreen was banned, unless they had a doctor's note. The realization that teachers were allowed to wear sunscreen, but not students, prompted state legislators to take action.
SUNucate is a public health initiative designed to spread awareness of the importance of sun-protective behaviors and remove barriers that probibit access to important sun-protective measures, such as sunscreen and sun-protective clothing.
IS TANNING ADDICTIVE?
Congratulations to EMF Board Member, Jerod Stapleton, PhD
Researchers have recently begun to take a closer look at the possibility that tanning could have addictive-like qualities. Effective treatments for tanning addiction or programs to assist in tanning cessation have yet to be developed.
Dr. Jerod Stapleton, a behavioral scientist in the Population Science Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and an assistant professor of medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been awarded a grant from the National Cancer Institute to develop and test an intervention targeting frequent indoor tanning users.
"I'm very excited about the potential for creating something for this group of frequent users that have not been traditionally targeted in prevention research."
Over the summer, one of our partners, Moving for Melanoma, a nonprofit organization in Delaware, used the Enright Sun Safety Certification online programs to educate 150 kids at the Delaware National Guard Youth Camp. Thank you to Mary Bruno for organizing this and working together to raise sun safety awareness to prevent melanoma.
