Now Harvesting: Hinona Turnips
Have you seen a hinona turnip before? It's an ancient Japanese salad turnip that was first cultivated in the 1400s, with roots that can grow up to a foot long. It has a spicy, sweet flavor that makes it perfect for salads. They are also excellent pickled or cooked.

Want to try something new? Here are some ideas:
  1. It is traditional to use these turnips to make sakura zuke, or cherry blossom pickle. Here's a recipe to try
  2. Caramelize the turnip with butter, sugar and soy sauce for a delicious side dish. [via High Mowing]

It's Not Too Late to Plant!

It may be September but bgardeners still have time to plant veggies!

Some tips for fall planting:

1. Pay attention to the first frost date. In North Salem and Connecticut, the first frost last year was in the middle of October, for Zones 6A and 6B

2. Plants going in the ground now will be overwintering, so you'll want to provide some shelter for your plants.  Check out these instructions for building a hoop house!

Here's a round-up of links to help you with fall planting!
