Letter from Pastor Melissa
I write this as I am at the Clergy Convocation in which our Bishop gathers the clergy for a time of renewal and learning. Today, Bishop Hagiya inspired me in his talk on leadership. As a reference he used Scharmer's Theory U and the steps on the left side of the U - it is a theory on changing a management style. The first steps in changing a style of operating so that new ways of operating can emerge are: Downloading past patterns (suspending), Seeing with fresh eyes (redirecting), Sensing from the field (letting go). In short, in order to allow new styles to emerge, first you suspend past patterns of operating so that you can see the situation with fresh eyes. As you are viewing the situation with fresh eyes, you can let go to allow new possibilities to emerge that could not because old patterns obscured or prevented the new from emerging. It's at this point where we as Christians sit with God in discernment allowing God to speak to us. It's like a painter before a blank canvas. The moment where the creative Spirit works with the painter to create the new thing.
What if it is our chance to stand before the blank canvas letting the Spirit speak to us individually and collectively allowing God to speak through us to bring the new thing God wants to birth in the world. Just as John 3:1-21 recounts Nicodemus in conversation with Jesus about how we are born anew. Nicodemus finds it hard to understand this concept of being born again, being born anew. His old understanding prevents him. Yet, Jesus explains it's a newness brought about by the Spirit of God. Standing before the blank canvas we can't create what is next without being grounded in God so God's spirit can co-create with our spirit. Second, we can't create on the blank canvas without each other. We need the collective energy of our community to co-create what is next. As Archbishop says in his book written with the Dalai Lama, "A person is a person through other people." Working with God and each other we can stand before the blank canvas and wait as God inspires us and all people into beings creating a future. A future of hope, peace, joy and love.

Blessings,
Pastor Melissa

Small World Preschool Update
The children of Small World enjoyed participating in the Blessings of the Back packs last month. Later that day everyone visited their classroom, met their teachers and had a snow cone together at our 2nd annual Meet your Teacher day!

August was a busy time of getting to know each other and learning the routine. The 3-year-olds had fun exploring the deep blue sea with their Ocean animal curriculum. The 4-year-olds were challenged daily with writing exercises and had fun with the art activities of their Super Hero theme! We look forward to starting the monthly chapel time this month.  The preschool community continues to grow weekly and the help of many church members have supported Small World with their volunteered help and time. Many thanks from all the teachers here at Small World Preschool!

What's Happening
Alternative Gift Fair
There are many people that it is difficult to find a gift for the holidays.  Do something that honors them and helps others who need help.  Choose a Heifer project to serve people all over the world.  Make donations to help build houses in our own habitat for humanity/ wounded warriors village.  Or give to our local ministries such as the Santa Clarita Food Pantry.

With each donation you get a card with a description of the ministry to give the recipient.  It is also a great way to help children learn about giving as a stocking stuffer.  Date is November 19 starting at 10:00 in Fellowship Hall.  Give yourself extra time for browsing.

Commission on the Status and Role of Women Presents a Christmas Boutique
COSROW is looking for donations for the Christmas Boutique on November 12.  If you are making decorations or presents that you think others might enjoy, sign up at the COSROW table to tell us what you'll bring.  We also have food items, jams, meals in a jar, and soup for lunch.  Sit down for a lunch break with friends and enjoy meeting other people.  It will give you some time to look around and think about who you can share a little cheer with.  We will also have a booth at the Relay for Life Boutique on Saturday, November 18.

Feeding it Forward
Our last two months of helping the Bridge to Home Shelter are September and October.  Thank you to everyone who has been bringing food and serving.  The clients have been very appreciative and always thank us for the food.

Last Call for Music Lovers
COSROW is looking forward to a weekend of singing and fun as well as prayers, devotions, and Bible study.  There is still time to sign up.  The cost is $225 for five meals and rooms in a historic Pacific Palisades home.  All ladies of all ages are welcome!

Maturing Ministries - Sept 8th and Sept 22nd @ 9:30am meeting and lunch. Founders Hall.

Joyful Bible Study - Sept 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th @ 9:30am in Founders Hall. Starting The Book of Paul.

Aldersgate Woman's Retreat in Pacific Palisades, Sept 15th - 17th. Come one come all let's sing our praises. Cost is $225.00 which includes everything. Sign up on the patio between services.

Thank you to our congregation
The Family Promise families that we hosted in August sent us this message:  "We loved that the kids felt like they were at home.  And the food was great!"

J.A.M. Club

I can not believe it is the end of August.  School is back in session, and households are becoming more and more busy with each passing day.  I encourage you to make you and your children's spiritual journey a priority.  While I would love to see everyone every time the church doors are open, I know that isn't possible this day and age.  Every time we turn around there is another responsibility put before us.  How do we make the best choice for everyone involved?  I highly encourage families to sit down and pick a date or two (or even three or four) of the month that is for church activities.  The first Sunday is a great choice, what better way to recharge then with communion.  The children have been joining the congregation for communion for a few months now, and it is always a blessing to watch the families partake together, the love shining through a little's eyes as they make this important sacrament of the church their own.  Sunday mornings busy - what about Sunday nights?  Family Fun Night will be kicking off September 10 with a worship service led by our own Debbie and Garth!  There will be fellowship, food, fun and worship.  (Speaking of food, I understand that there will be communion offered then also).
Family fun night has been restructured for this year.  The first Sunday of the month will be different varieties of worship, the second week will be traditional family fun night as we know it.  The third week will be an intergenerational activity, always different, always fun.  I promise to keep you on your toes.  The last Sunday of the month will be back to our traditional family fun night activities.  Each week will begin with a meal, but again we have changed things up.  We are still firming up what will happen each week but dinner will consist of one week of barbeque hot dogs and hamburgers provided with each family bringing sides if desired, one week of potluck, one week of a taco cart provided by the church, and one that is a spaghetti dinner youth fund raiser.
As I said mark your calendars now and celebrate the grace of Christ with SCUMC.

Upcoming dates that I encourage you to mark down now:
September 10th, Back to Church Sunday, 3rd grade bible dedication and distribution (please contact the church office if you have a 3rd grader (or above) who is ready to receive their bible.  We need to know how you would like their name to read in the dedication.
October 29th, Trunk or Treat.  Start planning now on how to decorate your car.
December 3rd, Advent wreath workshop.
There is many great family activities in the plans, I hope to share a few with you.

Grace and Peace,
