Robert Lee Head of School |
This week we welcomed home winners. The
North State Greenville Little League
team represented our school, our city, our state and the Southeast region by successfully winning their way to the World Series Championship. All along the way the team members, including Drew Fields from Christ Covenant, his father, Brian and mother, Wagner kept their eyes on the prize; which is not always a championship trophy, but rather fully relying on God symbolized by their F.R.O.G.
The team was all winners, and their performance and our own sports teams' during this busy season have helped define more clearly winning God's way. Often in the world, and in my own life, I have mistakenly associated winning with finishing first. At times in the heat of competition, we are tempted to compromise our faith, our values, and our character in order to beat the competition.
There have been days I have strived and struggled to have my own way, to finish on top, to be first, but in the end felt nothing like a winner. Jesus defines winning not as beating others, but rather serving others. Lifting our opponents up with encouragement, praying for our enemies, putting others in front is a winning record in the kingdom.
Our students and our sports teams, by His Grace, have demonstrated themselves as winners consistently while remaining competitive. Last year, our school was unanimously awarded the Best Sportsmanship Award of all the schools in our conference, except for one vote. The one dissenting vote was our own Athletic Director, Tom Jones, who voted for others as a model of this winning demeanor. Under his leadership, our sports teams and coaches are always complemented on their attitude on and off the field.
Join me in welcoming the North State Little League team back to town and back to our school. Also help me remember that winning is often not finishing first in every competition, but rather finishing like Christ, "who, being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself of no reputation." Phil. 2:6-7a. Our salvation was won by One who made himself last that we may become first.
