Associate/Full Professor - Department of African American and African Studies - University of California, Davis
The University of California, Davis invites applications for a tenured position in African American Studies
at the level of Associate or Full Professor, to begin July 1, 2018. The successful candidate will be
expected to assume responsibilities as Chair of the Department beginning one year after appointment.
Disciplinary field and specialization are open, but interdisciplinary work within the social sciences or
humanities is preferred. The successful candidate should complement the strengths and goals of the
Department of African American and African Studies at UC Davis. In order to be considered at the
Associate or Full Professor rank, an applicant's record of scholarship must meet the standards for tenure
at the University of California. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
We seek a scholar with an accomplished and innovative publication profile, an excellent record of
teaching, intellectual distinction, and interdisciplinary expertise in the field of African American Studies.
The successful candidate should possess a strong track record of departmental/university service and
collaboration, proven administrative abilities, and successful extramural funding. We are especially
interested in candidates who will provide programmatic leadership in the delivery of our undergraduate
and graduate curricula, who will foster outreach and grant-writing activities to support programmatic
goals, and who are committed to building and sustaining cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental
connections to other programs on the campus. Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate
courses with cultural, political, social, and economic dimensions of the contemporary African American
experience.
Our program is multidisciplinary, with strengths in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences.
We offer an undergraduate major and minor program as well as a graduate Designated Emphasis with
the Cultural Studies Program. Faculty members are also encouraged to seek affiliation with a number of
graduate groups within the University.

2018-2019 Postdoctoral Positions - Department of African American Studies at Princeton University
The Department of African American Studies at Princeton University invites applications from pre-tenure
scholars and recent Ph.D. graduates in all disciplines for two postdoctoral or more senior research positions.
These positions will be awarded for the academic year 2018-2019 to emerging scholars who will devote their
ten-month residency at Princeton to writing about race in the national or global contexts and, with the approval
of the Dean of the Faculty, to teaching one semester-long undergraduate course. PhD in relevant discipline
required.
Postdoctoral scholars will also participate with department faculty members and affiliated graduate students in a
seminar devoted to the discussion of work in progress. In addition, they will be invited to participate in other
programs, including seminars, colloquia, and public lectures and will enjoy access to Firestone Library and to a
wide range of activities throughout the University. Applicants should have received the doctorate within the past
five years and cannot be in the process of writing a dissertation. The term for these positions extends from
September 1, 2018 until July 1, 2019; a competitive salary will be provided.

African American Studies faculty members evaluates applicants on the basis of:
- the significance of their proposed research and its relevance to the purposes of the department;
- the quality of their previous research and their ability to benefit from the activities of the department;
- the contribution they are likely to make to higher education in the future through teaching and writing about race.

Spotlight on Ms. Nicole Amarteifio, Creator, Director & Producer An African City Honoree for AAI's 2017 Leadership in African Media & Arts Award
The Africa-America Institute will bestow the 2017 Leadership in African Media & Arts Award to Nicole Amarteifio at the AAI 33rd Annual Awards Gala on September 19th, 2017 in New York City.
Called the Shonda Rhimes of Ghana by Marie Claire, Nicole is redefining the narrative and perceptions of African women, with her popular web-series, An African City. The web-series dubbed Africa's 'Sex and the City' is set in Ghana's capital, Accra, and follows five modern African women who return to the continent after spending much of their adult life abroad.
Ms. Amarteifio is among several other highly acclaimed entrepreneurs cited in The Financial Times 2015 "Top 25 Africans to Watch" list, after a successful launch of the hit web series 'An African City.' The show hit 1 million views within the first several weeks of its release and is considered one of Ghana's most successful YouTube channels.
Earlier in her career Nicole was the first ever social media strategist for the Africa Region at The World Bank
