Honoring Tradition. Building Community. Educating for Tomorrow.
Your WCS News
We're off to a great start at WCS!  Our elementary schools have started book clubs and homework clubs, created a Believe in YourSelfie wall, picked #ChooseKind for a school moto, watched the eclipse, learned about bus safety, and more.

Our Middle and High Schools began their year with new Principals, Mr. Martini (MS) and Mrs. Walker (HS).  They, too, are off to a great start with their "Start with Hello" program, mini-clubs, busy athletics schedules, Theatre Open Houses, improvement committees, band practices, and so much more.

And of course, all of our WCS schools are busy educating for tomorrow, finding new and creative ways to reach kids where they are and helping them to succeed in school.

We encourage you to follow our District and individual schools on our social media channels to get the inside view of the great things happening in our schools. You can find the links with the building events schedule at the end of this newsletter.

An Author is Among Us

WCS is proud to announce that we have an author among us!  Last year, WHS Band Director Matt Spradlin was selected to contribute an article to a book compiled by Gary Stith, the Director of Bands at Houghton College. The book, titled  The Conductor's Companion: 100 Rehearsal Techniques, Imaginative Ideas, Quotes, and Facts, was published and released earlier this year. The intent of the book is to create a resource of rehearsal techniques and instructional ideas to share with the world of Instrumental Music Educators. Matt's article in the book is titled, "Teaching Secondary Instruments through Peer Instruction".

This is an honor for a faculty member to be included among contributing authors from top high school and collegiate programs from across the country. Anyone who has met and/or worked with  Matt know that he embodies the Pride of Wilmington each time he steps in front of his students.

Matt has great things planned for the band program this year, so be sure to come see the Marching Band at a football game, or plan an evening of beautiful music with the WHS Wind Ensemble. You will be amazed at the talent of our WHS students and their director.

Matt is truly educating for tomorrow!
eclipse
Eclipse 2017

What a great experience for our WCS students!  They got to see the eclipse, study science, and experience a historical event as it unfolded. The kids were terrific, the community was supportive, and the teachers, administrators, and aides made sure that students could experience the eclipse safely.

Attendance Awareness

Every child counts and has the right to a quality education.  Every parent and guardian has a legal responsibility to make sure their child attends school on time and every day. September is National Attendance Awareness Month. At WCS we promote strong attendance every month!

Know the Benefits
  • Keep from falling behind in school
  • Stay on track for graduation
  • Improve early reading skills
  • Build self-confidence
  • Develop healthy life habits
Know the Numbers
Ohio Bill 410 recently changed the way that schools track attendance. We now count hours as opposed to days. Time missed when students are tardy or absent can add up quickly and students miss valuable learning time by missing even a small part of a school day.

Know the Warning Signs
Learn more about the new WCS attendance policy in your student's school handbook, and read our flyer and FAQ's for more information on our attendance expectations.

You can find attendance information on every WCS school website on the Parents/Quick Links page.  Just visit WilmingtonCitySchools.com/schools

Walk/Ride to School Day for East End and Denver

WHAT: Walk/Bike to School Day is a day we celebrate physical activity. We'll get our blood pumping and then enjoy a healthy snack before heading into school to start our day! All you have to do is discuss this fun activity with your family to see if you may participate. This is a family activity. We'd like all students that participate to have at least one member of their family joi n them.

After you have safely walked/biked to school that morning with your family we'll continue to walk around the playground to get more exercise.

WHEN: DENVER: Monday, September 18th (8:30-9:00)
EAST END: Tuesday, September 19th (8:30-9:00)

WHO: All families are invited to participate. Even if you don't live close enough to walk or bike you may see if your family can bring you to school at 8:30 that day and you can walk the track with us to get some great exercise.

WHY: In the United States, International Walk/Bike to School Day is expected to include more than 5,000 events across all 50 states.
Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world. Walk/Bike to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, concern for the environment and building connections between families, school and the broader community.
