A Focus on Mental Illness in Children Comes to Sanborn
The School Welcomes Former NH Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick For a Special Event

Sanborn Regional High School is excited to announce that it will be hosting former New Hampshire Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick to the school on September 14, 2017 to share his message about childhood mental illness with the community. This event is jointly sponsored by the Sanborn Regional School District, Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth, the Center for Life Management, Plaistow Area Commerce Exchange, and the Campaign to Change Direction. In his own words, Broderick sets the stage for his message by saying the following:

"Mental illness is the only illness from my childhood that remains in the shadows. We need to change the culture surrounding emotional suffering and we need to begin by letting everyone know its five most common signs and that early detection and treatment yield great success."

Sanborn Principal Brian M. Stack had this to say about the event: "Mental illness, both in children and adults, is one of the biggest threats to the long-term success of our local communities in southern New Hampshire. We have all been touched by someone with mental illness, and now more than ever, we need to band together to bring this issue to light and strategize what we can do as a larger community to eliminate this threat for our future. Our children are counting on us, and Mr. Broderick's campaign is one way we can educate ourselves on the best way to take action today for a better tomorrow."

Sanborn students will have the opportunity to hear Mr. Broderick speak in one of two morning sessions. At 11:30 AM, members of the public can meet Mr. Broderick by attending the Plaistow Area Commerce Exchange (P.A.C.E.)'s  luncheon with business and community members at the school. To RSVP for lunch, please contact Anne at P.A.C.E. at [email protected] . Lunch is $15.00 per person.

A New School Rule to Enforce Deadlines
A Message From Mr. Stack, Principal

If you are familiar with the
competency-based grading practices that our school has used for the better part of the last decade, you know that one of the hallmarks of the school's philosophy is that
grades represent what students LEARN, not what they EARN. Grades are an accurate representation of how deep a student understands a topic, and cannot be influenced by the behaviors that led (or didn't lead) to that grade. It sounds like a logical statement, but what does that mean, exactly?

Consider these statements:
  • It doesn't matter how many hours you study for the test, but it does matter how well you do on the test.
  • It doesn't matter how many times you raised your hand to contribute to a class discussion, but it matters how well you enhanced to the discussion when you did contribute.

Most people can rally around these statements, but this one seems to create friction and controversy:

  • It doesn't matter how long it takes you to complete an assignment, but it matters how well you did on it.
To some, we seem to be suggesting that we don't value deadlines in our system, or that we are not doing enough to help students gain important real-world skills such as managing their time. I can tell you that this couldn't be further from the truth. The problem is, to date we haven't found a great way to hold students accountable for meeting deadlines without compromising the competency-based learning philosophies.

This year, we will be instituting a new system that we believe will address this concern. We will be instituting a "privilege restriction list that will be maintained by our staff daily. If a student is behind in their work, they run the risk of being excluded from any number of "privileges" at the school - things like playing a sport, participating in a club, or attending a school dance or field trip. Our entire staff will share the burden and responsibility of putting students on the list when they are behind and also removing their access to privileges while they are on the list. What we hope is that students will quickly make two realizations:

1. If I end up on the list, the only way to get off the list is to get my work complete.
2. I would have been better off staying off the list in the first place.

Some may argue that it is a tough stance for our school to take, but we value so much the importance of teaching students how to better manage their time that we are willing to take such a hard stance on this issue. We hope you agree.

Here is the full policy, if you are interested:

Sanborn Regional High School has many privileges available to students who have completed all of their academic work in a timely manner. Examples of privileges are as follows:

  • Participation in athletic contests and/or practices
  • Participation in clubs
  • Participation in after school events such as dances, awards nights, talent shows, plays, etc.
  • Participation in school-day special events such as assemblies, pep rallies, and field trips
  • The ability for choice of activities during FLT
  • Other classroom privileges, as determined by individual teachers

Students who have not completed their academic work in a timely manner will be placed on the IWS List by their teacher.  Students who are placed on the IWS List may not participate in activities or programs that are considered privileges until they have been removed from the list.

Teachers will place students on the list by the end of the school day following the due date of the assignment.  When assignments are turned in, teachers will remove the student from the list by the end of the next school day.  Privilege eligibility returns when the student's name is removed from the list by the teacher.

Teachers will, via email, notify the student, parent/guardian(s), and guidance / special education staff (as appropriate) as soon as the student is put on the list.

Appeals: Students placed on the IWSList may appeal the decision by contacting, in writing, their administrator (Mr. Dawson, Mr. Krzyzanowski, or Mr. Stack). Students must provide evidence to support their appeal.

Freshman Field Trip to Camp Lincoln
September 15, 2017

On Friday, September 15th, ninth grade students will attend a team-building field trip at Camp Lincoln in Kingston, NH. The purpose of this trip is to unite students from their various sending schools and to provide a positive experience to kick-off high school. Buses will depart from the high school at 7:45 AM and will return in time for afternoon dismissal. Students will need to provide their own lunch and drinks for the day (sunscreen and bug spray are also recommended). There is no cost for the trip; however, in order to attend, students must complete the attached field trip form and Challenge Course Release form prior to the trip.  Students who do not complete these forms will not be allowed to attend the trip. These forms can be brought to the main office or students may give them to their advisor on the first day of school.

Do You Have Unwanted Clothing?
Please Use Our Planet Aid Donation Boxes, Located in the Staff Parking Lot

When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
