Welcome to Cedar Valley Connections, a newsletter to connect the leaders of the nonprofit sector. 


Board Governance Workshop...
We invite nonprofit executive directors and board chairs as well as nonprofit professionals and board members to join us as we host Karin McCan who will be speaking on: Partnerships that Work: Nonprofit Executives & Boards Moving Forward - Together on Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 8-9:30 a.m. at The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.  

Are you considering joining a board of directors? Are you on a board and unsure what exactly it is you should be doing? Have you just stepped into the board chair role and are unclear about your role? Are you an executive director struggling to find the right board members for your organization? If yes, this session is for you! Join us to learn:
  • About strategies to recruit and retain the right board members
  • How to structure an effective board orientation and board meeting
  • The six key roles and responsibilities of board members
  • The difference between governance and management
  • How board chairs and executive directors can effectively work together
Kari McCann Boutell has served as the President of the Iowa Council of Foundations since 2015. In this role, Kari works directly with the ICoF board of directors and oversees organizational activities including strategic planning,
program development and management, membership recruitment and retention, as well as education and outreach for the purpose of supporting philanthropy in Iowa.
Kari started her career in philanthropy in eighth-grade as a youth grantmaker. She earned her B.A. in Nonprofit Management from the University of Northern Iowa in 2011 and completed her M.A. in Philanthropic Studies at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy in May 2013.  Kari lives in Dubuque, Iowa with her husband, Jeramy.

Marketing Meet-Up Group...

Member Spotlight...

Founded in 2005,  Designer Genes is a group of families of children and adults with Down syndrome.


Designer Genes provides information, resources, advocacy, and support to individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the communities in Northeast Iowa.

Mission:   To provide information, resources, advocacy and support to individuals with Down syndrome, their families and their communities.
VISION: To provide opportunit ies and resources for persons with Down syndrome to live independently and to fully participate in all aspects of their communities.
VALUES: To envision a community that engenders dignity and respect for all persons with Down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities.

Job Title:   Cedar Valley's Promise Coordinator

This position is based in Waterloo and is responsible to the Black Hawk County Decategorization Project, Community Partnerships for Protecting Children and Early Childhood Iowa. This position will provide administrative support to a governing board, and will perform operational or specialized planning, community and program organizational coordination and collaboration. Duties will include the development and implementation of a community plan addressing Child Welfare, Juvenile Justice and early childhood service priorities, program monitoring, outcome evaluation and budget oversight. 

Applicant must have bachelor's degree, be Microsoft Office proficient. Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related field, experience in the fields of business development, strategic planning and implementation, facilitating community coalitions, and community decision making processes.   Apply on-line at  www.CIJDC.com.
 
Community Events & News...

We are preparing for the 2017 annual edition of our
Personal
nal Care Drive. Local businesses, churches, and organizations will be collecting personal care items to be distributed to over 200 nonprofit agencies in 16 northeast Iowa counties, assisting over 48,000 people in need.

The 2017 Personal Care Drive will co nclude at local stores, where volunteers will hand out flyers including a list of personal care items in need and encourage shoppers to donate to the Personal Care Drive. The closing events will occur at the Waterloo Walmart on  August 5 , at remaining Cedar Valley Walmart stores and all Cedar Valley Fareway stores on  August 12 , and at Cedar Falls Natural Grocers on  August 19 . For a list of items to donate, click here We are also looking for volunteers for this event. If you'd like to volunteer at one of the stores in August, please contact Jessica Haring at  [email protected] .



You are invited to come out to our FREE STEM Fair at the Fair on 
Friday, July 28th from 1:00-4:00pm in Estel Hall at the National Cattle Congress.  
This Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fair will feature exhibits from local businesses, schools and community based groups highlighting STEM. 

Iowa State University will bring their STEM trailer.  Viking Pump will offer 3-d imaging.  Warburg Biology Department always brings critters. 
New this year is the Insect and Butterfly Zoo, Silo's and Smokestacks, Cedar Valley Reads and the Iowa Children's Museum.
