AFTER FOUR DAYS it barely seems like we were off for the summer. At least, the vibe at school is such that nobody has missed a beat.
In fact, the enthusiasm for what this year holds is pretty palpable. The kickoff Town Hall has a Dr. Seuss theme that put everyone in a good mood, which has continued throughout the week.
With several new administrators in place, a few new faculty members and a reinvigorated Student Life department, all signs point to the makings of a great year at FJA. Click here for pictures from the first day of school.
Freshman Shabbaton Opens the School Year

THE WEEKEND BEFORE school began kicked off the 2017-18 Shabbatonim program with the freshman class up first.
By all accounts, the kids had a great time at Tamarack ... and who could blame them? The weather was great and, well, it's camp.
Bonding, team building and enjoying the traditions of the Sabbath set in the bucolic setting of Butzel seems like a good way to start the school year off. Click here for tons of photos.
Curriculum Night Preparations
DON'T FORGET TO mark your calendar for Curriculum Night beginning at 7 p.m. next Tues., Sept. 5. Make the time to meet your child's faculty advisor and their teachers, as well as new members of the administration.
Curriculum Night helps keep you in the loop and set expectations for what will be taking place throughout the semester. Our faculty appreciates the effort that parents make to attend. We look forward to seeing you after the holiday weekend. Shabbat Shalom!

Crisis Demands a Response

CRISES, WHETHER MAN-MADE or natural, require our attention. Reaction is an expression of our principles and values, while inaction negates our responsibility to be agents of positive change. In the weeks before the commencement of the new school year, organized groups promoting bigotry and hate gathered to encourage intolerance.
Responding with silence (I recognize the oxymoron) is tantamount to condonation, which only strengthens their resolve, emboldening them even further. The mere knowledge of a need, misdeed or injustice requires us to respond. Awareness makes us responsible whether we want to be or not.
It is specifically this reason that the Torah condemns Sodom for turning its back on guests and strangers. And, in this week's Torah portion, Ki Teitzei, we are instructed not to feign obliviousness when we encounter a lost object, an overburdened beast or an individual in need.
While Charlottesville brought out the worst in people, the accounts of initiative and heroism in the wake of Hurricane Harvey demonstrate the best of people. Officials and civilians alike have responded, rescuing and sustaining countless individuals.
Crises are moments that test our values as Jews and humans, reminding us that averting our eyes should never be an option. Throughout their four years at FJA, students develop a strong Jewish identity, sense of justice and conviction.
These characteristics are essential in ensuring that we will always stand against hate and injustice and alongside all who need support.

High Hopes for a Great Season
BOYS TENNIS KICKED off its 2017 season and the expectations are high for the two-time MHSAA state final qualifiers after coming off last year's Top 10 finish at the state finals.
Head coach Larry Stark, now in his third year, returns with much of his all-star lineup intact in his effort to lead the Jags back to prominence. With a slew of seniors making up the first string, including Jacob Bean, Ilan Elrom, Noah Kahan, Seth Kahan, Noah Goodman and Drew Klayman, Stark says the upperclassmen will provide good leadership.
Of course, with nearly a month of practice already under their belts, the Jags have gotten a taste of what lies ahead this season having already competed against many of the state's top-ranked teams.
Please show your support by coming Drake Sports Park throughout the fall season to let the Jags know their classmates are behind them as they continue FJA's fine tradition of competitive boys' tennis.
VOLLEYBALL | Jags Clinch Season Opener
THE LADY JAGS jumped out to a fast start during the girls' season opener, defeating Roeper 3-0 at home. Junior setter Stephanie Snover shined throughout the evening, leading the team in assists.
Senior Yael Elrom had several big kills as the Jag's middle hitter, helping to help secure the victory for head coach Joe Bernstein. Not to be outdone, sophomore right side hitter Hannah Resnick and senior outside hitter Ruby Ruben made their marks during the game.
The girls return to the friendly confines of the JCC for a 5 p.m. start on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in their first league game of the season against Austin Catholic.

Open Casting for
Fall's "Pippin" Begins
THE PERFORMING ARTS Department is holding an open casting for actors, singers and dancers to fill slots in preparation for FJA's 2017 Fall Musical, "Pippin," (2013 Revival) directed by Mitch Master.
"This Steven Schwartz classic will be a magical, musical production that will showcase our talented Frankel Jewish Academy Performing Arts students quite nicely," Master said.
All auditions and callbacks will be held in the Performing Arts (P.A) Studio.
Students may find vocal and acting audition information on Schoology. The Director will review all information at the Audition Prep.
Vocal & Dancing Auditions: Tuesday, September 5 | 3:45-6:30 p.m.
Students should come prepared to perform their best 16 bars of a song and are expected to learn a short dance combination. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes for full range of motion.
Acting Auditions: Wednesday, September 6 | 3:45-6 p.m.
Students should come prepared to perform a one-minute monologue and be prepared to read cuts from the script.
Callbacks: Thursday, September 7 |
3:45-6 p.m.
Students invited to "Callbacks" should be prepared to sing and/or read from additional music and acting cuts.
