Greetings from the Director
Welcome back to all families who recently returned to Concord after
 vacations. It was a busy summer at the Concord Free Public Library. Congratulations to the 321 participants of the 2017
Build a Better World Summer Reading Program who collectively read a total of 223,846 minutes. Building on the success of that program, the children's librarians will be offering the
101 Picture Books CFPL Loves Program for children ages birth to five years with special fall story times featuring the recommended titles.
Tech Tuesdays will also return on early release days to teach kids Minecraft, Lego Robotics, Stop Motion Animation, and 3D Design & Print among other STEAM related skills. We are also pleased to offer a 2nd year of
Girls Who Code for girls in 6th - 12th grade. An information session for interested participants will be held at the Fowler Branch Library (1322 Main Street) on September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
A special literary train trip for families is planned for September 23rd in honor of Henry David Thoreau's bicentennial anniversary the details for which are included in this newsletter.
Please note the Main Library has expanded weekend hours and Sunday service will resume from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. on September 10th.

"Concord, which is my Rome": Henry Thoreau and His Home Town : Lecture Series

"Concord, which is my Rome" programming continues in September with lectures by two prominent Thoreau scholars. Both lectures are from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Main Library Rotunda. They are free and open to the public. All are welcome.
"I think I could write a poem to be called Concord": Thoreau Expresses the Inexpressible."

The Lecture will be given by Elizabeth Hall Witherell, the editor-in-chief of the ongoing Thoreau Edition, published by Princeton University Press.
The Boatman: Henry David Thoreau's River Years

Robert Thorson will discuss his new book with the same title. Thorson is a Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

In honor of the bicentennial anniversary of Henry David Thoreau's birth, the Concord Free Public Library, the Concord Museum, the Massachusetts Center for the Book and the Fitchburg Public Library have planned a fun family event for Saturday, September 23, 2017. 
Families will gather at the train depot at 80 Thoreau Street, Concord, MA at 11:00 a.m. in order to catch the 11:25 a.m. train to Fitchburg. Onboard participants will learn about train safety and enjoy local author Sally Sanford's reading of her book, Henry and the Huckleberries. Upon arrival staff from the Fitchburg Public Library will welcome Concord guests at 12:11 p.m. and lead them to an area park to read a StoryWalk® of D.B. Johnson's Henry Hikes to Fitchburg, create a journal, and enjoy some blackberry ice cream.
The fun will continue when Fitchburg families join Concord families on the inbound 2:05 p.m. train to Concord to participate in hands-on activities at the Concord Free Public Library. A short walk will bring families to the historic Main Library at 129 Main Street, Concord, MA for highlights that will include weaving natural materials and working on the journals. We will bid our Fitchburg friends good-bye as they leave for home on the 4:05 p.m. train.
Thanks to the generosity of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the round-trip train ride is free to all! Snacks will be provided, but families are encouraged to pack a lunch. Advance registration is required. [Register] |
