Mission Collection:  Hurricane Harvey Relief
CNS photo/Jonathan Bachman, Reuters
In conjunction with the special collection that will be held in all parishes of the Diocese of Harrisburg this weekend for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, the first mission collection of the school year was held today and will continue until September 13. This is a part of the U.S. Catholic Bishops emergency collection to assist the millions of persons affected by this unprecedented catastrophic weather event.  This includes the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses.

Bishop Ronald W. Gainer of the Diocese of Harrisburg is urging all Catholics to offer prayers for those affected including the first responders and also to give generously. He cited the plea of Bishop José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles and Vice President of the USCCB, "Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that have lost loved ones and to all who have lost homes and businesses along with their sense of peace and normalcy. We also stand with our brother bishops in the region who have the difficult task of providing pastoral care in these most trying times while managing their own losses. Our prayerful and financial support is urgently needed."

Lunch Accounts
Our Lunchtime Point of Sale purchasing system for student lunches is connected directly to the MMS online parent portal accessible through the York Catholic website.  Parents simply log in to the MMS parent portal, choose "View Cafeteria Account," click "Students," and follow the options to deposit money into their students' accounts.  As parents, you will be able to view what your student is purchasing in the cafeteria.  To ensure we are using this system to its potential, everyone is required to use their Lunchtime account log in to pay for his or her lunch meals.  The following policies are in place regarding Lunchtime Accounts and Balances.  We encourage parents to sign up for email notification when their Lunchtime account balances are getting low.
  • Checks and/or cash are not accepted in the cafeteria for food purchases during lunch periods. It is the responsibility of the student to submit a check (not cash) in a sealed envelope (clearly labeled with his/her name, grade, and student ID number) and place it in the Lunchtime box located in the cafeteria for the student's account to be credited. The minimum check amount is $10. Funds may not be available for 24 hours.
  • It is the student and parent's responsibility to monitor the Lunchtime account online for balance information and retain a positive balance at all times.
  • If a student has a lunchtime balance at $0.00 or below, they will only have the option to purchase a lunch consisting of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, fruit, and drink (1% white milk, iced tea, or orange drink) for $3.00.
  • No refunds will be given during the school year. Seniors will be issued a refund on accounts with a balance of $5 or more after graduation unless they have a sibling enrolled at YC in which case the balance will be transferred to the sibling for the next school year. All underclassmen accounts will roll-over to the next school year.

  • Report cards and MMS access will be held at the end of each quarter if Lunchtime balances are not current.
On Time Arrivals
A reminder about Tardiness from the Student Handbook, page 27:

Tardiness is lateness due to negligence. Students cannot be admitted late to homeroom without a pass. Verbal warnings may be given the first and second times a student is tardy.  The third tardy and all subsequent negligence of this nature for the year will result in the student being assigned to detention.  If a student is tardy more than ten times during the school year, tardiness becomes a major infraction and will result in four days detention for each subsequent day of lateness.

Please understand that tardiness could affect a student's participation in extracurricular activities, athletics, and music.

Girl Scout Awards

Congratulations to junior  Clare Brennan for receiving her Girl Scouts Gold Award for building shoe display shelves for the St. Mary's Thrift Shop. Clare spent almost a year gathering donations and supplies and coordinating a team to help with the project that included selecting wood, cutting, planing, sanding, staining,  polyurethaning, and using power tools. Numerous classmates and troop members assisted and attended her Gold Award ceremony.

Congratulations to 8th grader Emily Danczyk who earned her Girl Scouts Silver Award by helping to re-configure the non-fiction section of the St. Joseph York school library. She helped to inventory and pack away books before school ended last year, and once the bookcases were repositioned, she unpacked and re-shelved the books. She also created labels for each bookcase, bookmarks for each student, and a bulletin board and worksheets to use in library class.  She put in more than 60 hours of service to this project.

Both young ladies are excellent examples of service to our community.  Congratulations!
