Cash Cow

We had two big winners in our August CA$H COW contest! Congrats to Little Rebels Learning Center in Reinbeck and Kreg Krull of Waterloo, who each found a $100 jug.

We also had three $5 winners: Adam Kearns, Denise Lough and Jennifer Kearney, all of Cedar Falls. We love when we have lots of winners! We will label nine jugs with $100 in September. Best chance to find one is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

Going orange for Northeast Iowa Food Bank
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is marking Hunger Action Month in September to bring awareness of hunger in this area. Hansen's Dairy is supporting the effort by donating 50% of our ice cream cone sales on Sept. 23 to the Food Bank.

We will also be offering soft-serve ice cream cones in an all-natural orange flavor in September, which is the color representing the campaign.

Organic produce available at Hansen's Dairy Waterloo
Hansen's Dairy Waterloo is now carrying organic produce from Stewart Organic Farm in Waterloo.

Owner Nita Stewart has been growing a wide variety of vegetables most of her life, and began growing organically within the past 20 years.

"If I like it, I grow it, and I like just about everything," Stewart says.

Some of the vegetables that will be available at our Waterloo store include green beans, blue potatoes, garlic, peppers, zucchini and tomatoes. Her produce is very colorful, she says, including different hues of cherry tomatoes that are green when ripe. Her "green" bean mixture also includes purple beans, yellow beans and rattlesnake beans, which are green with purple stripes.

Stewart grows heirloom varieties of vegetables and always saves her seeds. She recently offered a seed-saving class at the Cedar Falls Public Library and offers some of her seeds to Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah. "If you save your own, you save a lot of money," she points out.

In order to grow organically, her techniques include composting, using straw mulch to help keep out weeds, repelling bugs with essential oils and just plain TLC.

Visitors are welcome at Stewart's farm by calling (319) 233-7387.

"People can visit by appointment or by chance," she says.

Grants available for Ag in the Classroom
Global company CHS is offering Classroom Grants to teachers who have an agriculture-related project they would like to conduct in the 2017-18 school year.

The fifteen $500 grants will be awarded to kindergarten through 12th grade core education teachers whose innovative classroom projects use agricultural concepts to teach reading, writing, math, nutrition, science and/or social studies.

Deadline: Sept. 15, 2017. Recipients will be notified by email in October 2017.
Grant Requirements: Use at least two lesson plans from the  National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix or two lesson plans from a state Agriculture in the Classroom program. In addition, grant proposals must demonstrate how local farmers, ranchers or agriculture industry representatives will be involved in the project.

Silos bus grants help fund field trip transportation
Silos-logo
Applications are now available for Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) Bus Grants in the 2017-18 school year.

These grants help schools in the Heritage Area of Northeast Iowa fund the transportation costs associated with field study trips to designated SSNHA Partner Sites and farm sites. The field trips allow students to learn about America's agricultural heritage firsthand.

The grant funds 75% of the total amount of transportation to and from the school and the selected site, not to exceed $350.

Deadline: Dec. 1 or whenever available funding as been depleted. Apply early!

Customer of the Month
Kris Fratzke and family
The September Customer of the Month is Kris Fratzke of Jesup.

Kris first learned about Hansen's milk upon recommendation from a friend, who touted the freshness, great taste, longer shelf life and non-homogenization of the milk.

"I don't remember exactly where we bought our first gallon of Hansen's milk, but after that first gallon my husband and two boys would not allow me to bring any other brand of milk home," she says.

Fortunately, the Moo Roo store in Waterloo opened shortly after that.

"We like to buy locally when possible," she says. "
When our boys were still living at home we purchased 6 gallons a week. I'm a skim milk girl, but the boys like 2% - or better yet, whole milk. We also love the fresh cheese curds and variety of ice cream flavors."

Thanks, Kris! Customers of the Month will receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month
Easton, Lemos and Erosion have enjoyed the unseasonably cool weather this summer.

If anyone has been on a tour of the farm this summer, they've surely petted our September Cow of the Month.

Easton, pictured in front, was born Nov. 20, 2009, making her almost 8 years old, and she's actually a great-grandmother to a 1-year-old heifer on the farm.

Easton has been in the dry cow pen for awhile this summer while she waits to give birth to her next calf. Think of the dry cow pen as the maternity ward - the cows in that area are all due to give birth within 60 days. A lot of people are sad to hear that we separate calves from their mothers right away at birth. We do this to ensure each calf is monitored closely for proper nutrition and any possible health problems within their first six weeks. The wonderful thing about our farm is that as the calf grows up, they will likely be reunited with their mother when they are both milking cows. Easton has two daughters, Elton and Erosion (pictured, upper right), who are both in the dry cow pen with her right now. All three of these ladies are very friendly with visitors. Easton, Elton and Erosion will all be calving in the next few weeks, so their family tree is going to grow a lot this fall!
Recipe
Cooking with Hansen's
Cozy up with this fall treat that will satisfy your sweet tooth without loads of sugary ingredients. Local apples could be substituted for pears in this recipe as well (you may have to extend cooking time a bit). Starred items can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores.

Baked Pears with Vanilla Yogurt
and Granola
Yields: 4 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS
2 medium pears (Bartlett or D'Anjou)
1/2 cup apple juice or cider* (in season)
1
cup
water
1
tablespoon
honey *
18
ounces
Country View Dairy vanilla yogurt *
1/2
cup
granola*

DIRECTIONS
  1. Preheat oven to 375° F. Cut pears in half lengthwise and remove core with a melon baller or small spoon. Place pears, cut side down, in a shallow baking dish just large enough to hold them. Pour apple juice and water over pears. Drizzle with honey. Cover pan loosely with foil and bake about 35 minutes or until tender.
  2. Place granola in a shallow baking pan or pie plate. Toast in oven 10 minutes. Set aside.
  3. When pears are done, pour baking liquid into a small saucepan and reduce over medium heat until about ¼ cup syrup remains. Set aside to cool.
  4. Divide yogurt among 4 shallow bowls, reserving some yogurt for topping, if desired. Place warm pear half, cut side up, over yogurt. Top with toasted granola and drizzle with syrup. Top with remaining yogurt.
