President's Message
Donna Broderick

"To give away money is an easy matter and in any (wo)man's power. But to decide to whom to  give it and how large and when, and for what purpose and how, is neither in every (wo)man's power nor an easy matter."  Aristotle

The most exciting time of the Impact 100 cycle is here! We are less than two weeks away from the Annual Awards Celebration, when Impact 100 will award FOUR grants of $101,000 each!  These grants will enable four organizations to transform lives through their breakthrough projects.  We are able to award these grants ONLY because we have generous, passionate members who are willing to share the gifts they have been given in order to make a difference in our community. We are Creating an IMPACT in our Community Together! Thank you!

Each of our seven Finalists has proposed an amazing project that has the potential to make a lasting impact in our community.  Our Finalists and the programs/projects they have proposed are (in the order they established):

Ohio Valley Voices - proposing the Audiology Clinic Expansion

Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission - proposing the Lincoln Grant Scholar House project

St. Joseph Home - proposing the St. Joseph Home Green Space project

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company - proposing the Education Program Expansion

Lighthouse Youth & Family Services - proposing the Agricultural Learning Center, Lighthouse Community School

Children's Home of Northern Kentucky
- proposing the  Technology Upgrade to Support Improved Healthcare Treatment

First Step Home - proposing The Terry Schoenling Home for Mothers and Infants Program

All seven of our Finalists have been chosen after thorough review by your sister members and are very strong candidates making our choice a very difficult one - selecting only four of these to fund. Yet I am sure that the four chosen will definitely have a positive impact on our community!

I hope you can join us for the Annual Awards Celebration (AAC) on September 12th at the Phoenix downtown. Always the highlight of the Impact 100 year, you will hear the Finalists speak and can then cast your vote. This is a great time to meet and network with other Impact 100 members and guests, enjoy a delicious meal, and then see which organizations are awarded our Four 2017 Grant Awards.  You won't want to miss the excitement!

Please consider bringing a guest to the Annual Awards Celebration to share your passion for Impact 100. This event is a great opportunity for family, friends and colleagues who may be interested in joining Impact 100 to see and hear for themselves what a difference Impact 100 has made in our community. Our goal is to continue to make a difference by awarding transformational grants next year!  With your help we can reach this goal!

If you are unable to attend the Annual Awards Celebration on September 12th, please vote via absentee ballot.  We value your input and encourage all of our members to vote!!

Please remember to register for our Annual Awards Celebration and invite your friends today!!!

All the best,
Donna Neyer Broderick

Your M embership in Action!
The mustangs have arrived! 2016 recipient Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship (CTRH) has two new residents as of August 29th and they seem to be enjoying their new corrals!

Rob Seideman, Executive Director of CTRH has shared more information including two videos about the process. One video shows part of the selection process for choosing the male and the second shows them unloading the black mustang once they arrived back in Milford. They can be found HERE.

We were very surprised at how well-cared for all the mustangs were at the BLM holding facility. The facility is located in Ewing, IL, and - in addition to the two mustangs we returned home with - there were approximately 300 other wild mustangs being held there.

The facility was clean, there were very few flies, plenty of shade, and all the horses were healthy and clearly well fed. The process to load them on to the CTRH trailer was incredibly humane, and not a hand was laid on them throughout the process.

That said, there are currently 50,000 wild mustangs being held in holding pens across the country, and the attached pic symbolizes how the two mustangs we adopted are no longer "just numbers." (All the horses at the Ewing holding facility had these id tags on bands around their necks, and the id tags in the pic were removed from our horses just before they were loaded on to the CTRH trailer.)

Instead, as you know, military veterans participating in CTRH's W.O.R.T.H. program will be responsible for gentling CTRH's newly adopted mustangs, and preparing them to be adopted out of CTRH and into loving homes, a fate much different than that faced by the 50,000 mustangs still in captivity, particularly since the future for America's wild mustangs is the bleakest it's ever been.

The cost to taxpayers to feed and care for BLM mustangs in captivity is up to $80 million/year, and the cost-saving measures being discussed now include 1) euthanizing 45,000 of the 50,000 horses in captivity, or 2) allowing them to be sold without the requirement that buyers guarantee the animals won't be resold for slaughter.

It could very well be the case that - for the mustangs adopted through Impact 100's generous support - they were spared one of those two fates - and in the nick of time.

It was great to see their plans come together. Thank you to Christine Schuermann, Executive Director of St. Francis Seraph Ministries, for the informative tour and wonderful refreshments after.

Member Spotlight
Susan Policastro and her husband Steve.
Susan Policastro

Who am I?
I have called Cincinnati home for almost 30 years, arriving as a newlywed in 1986 (husband Steve is a career long P&G employee). We settled first in Mt. Adams, then Anderson, and, after a short excursion to Sacramento, returned in 1995 to our current home in Loveland.  My extremely  brief professional life entailed a year at the Federal Reserve Board in DC followed by about 3 years in the Trust department at Fifth Third Bank here in Cincinnati. My real "career" of about 27 years has been the full-time raising of our 4 kids, now aged 29-19.  I consider myself "retired" as the oldest 3 are happily employed college graduates and the youngest is a junior at the University of Vermont. I enjoy golf, tennis, skiing, biking, reading, and knitting.

What made me want to join Impact 100?
As I saw "retirement " on the horizon , I knew I would want to increase my volunteering and I joined in 2010 as my oldest went off to college. Impact 100 was the perfect way to learn about all the amazing nonprofits and volunteer opportunities in our area. I currently consider myself a "professional volunteer" dividing my time among several organizations.  Impact 100 has also been a great way to widen my horizons beyond the Loveland community and get to know women from other parts of the city.

What keeps me a member of Impact?
While obviously supporting the deserving, inspiring nonprofits in my hometown is reason enough to remain a member, my involvement with the grant review committees and the feeling that I am in some small way personally contributing is what really keeps me coming back. Also, with my mother, sisters, and daughters all unfortunately living out-of-town, Impact 100 membership offers me some wonderful surrogates and I find my interaction with these dynamic, interesting women of all ages to be uplifting and refreshing.
