St. Brendan the Navigator
Parish Renewal Plan
Vestry/Renewal Team Update:
Dear members of St. Brendan's,
In preparation for developing a Mission Statement and a Values Statement at the parish meeting following worship on Sunday, September 10, the Vestry/Renewal Team proposes the following two models that might
serve as a starting point for crafting a single parish mission statement:
- The Mission of St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church is to love, serve and praise:
- to love one another as Christ loves us,
- to serve the needs of each other and those on the island and beyond,
- to praise God in all things.
2. The Mission of St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church is to love one another as Christ loves us, to support each other on our journey in faith, and to minister to the needs of those on
the island and beyond.
Our task at the meeting will be to consider adopting a single Mission Statement that will drive our life and
work as a congregation for the next 13 months of the parish renewal period. The Vestry/Renewal Team
suggests the following criteria to inform our deliberations at the meeting:
The parish mission statement should be:
- Memorable and
- Memorizable: people need to be able to recall from memory at least the important features of the statement;
- Definitive: the statement should define who we are at St. Brendan's and where we should be headed as God's people;
- Distinctive, recalling what makes us unique as a parish;
- Comprehensive: it speaks in relevant ways to all we try to do and be, especially in this time of transition and renewal;
- Comprehensible, easily understood by all.
- Succinct enough to be useful in all our publications and publicity;
In addition, the Vestry/Renewal Team proposes that we consider adopting a set of values to guide us in how we work together as a parish. Here is a proposed Values Statement to serve as a possible guide for our work at the meeting:
These are our values at St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church.
We will:
- Treat others with respect and compassion;
- Listen to others with trust and appreciation;
- Seek God's goodness in each person;
- Strive for consensus and work collaboratively;
- Join in acts of loving kindness;
- Share our faith joyfully across the generations;
- Learn from our past and look to the future with hope.
At the end of this process, we hope to have a Parish Mission Statement, and a Parish Values Statement that, combined with the already-adopted Parish Renewal Plan, will set our agenda and guide our work and life at St. Brendan's into the new year.
We look forward to engaging together in this exciting and important work on Sunday, September 10,
following worship!

The Vestry met August 15th to start the work of implementing the Parish Renewal Plan adopted by the
Parish August 13th. We discussed the importance of communicating to our parishioners throughout this process. The Renewal Plan, minutes of Vestry meetings, and monthly financial summaries will be posted in The Navigator e-Newsletter, on the website, and in the church.
The Vestry also met August 24th and 31st to consider and finalize drafts for two mission statements, along with a set of proposed values, to be presented at our Parish Meeting September 10th. We continued the discussion around organizing for the various ministries, components of the ministry descriptions, and how to best utilize the talents of our parishioners for these ministries.

Pursuant of Article IV, Section 1, of the Bylaws notice is hereby given by the Vestry that a Special Meeting
of the Members of St. Brendan the Navigator shall be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at 11:15 a.m.
to conduct the following business:
1. Consider the adoption of a Mission Statement and a Values Statement to
accompany the Parish Renewal Plan of St. Brendan the Navigator.

Women's Wildreness Adventure: Last Call!

There are one or two availabilities for the Wilderness trip that has been a memorable
and enjoyable experience every year. This year the trip is booked for September 11-14 at Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps- located in an ideal and secluded setting in Baxter State Park.

Scripture Notes for The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost
Beginning with today's Gospel reading, the ministry of Jesus is
directed toward his approaching
death and resurrection and his preparing the disciples for that
event. Peter, who moments before
expressed his faith in Jesus as the Messiah, now recoils at the
thought of Jesus' death. Jesus
begins
to explain that the way into the Kingdom of God is
sacrifice. His death and resurrection
will be the model for that way.
Last Sunday, we heard of the birth of Moses into slavery, and his adoption by the daughter of the
Egyptian king. Now as a young man, he has fled Egypt to escape punishment for killing an
Egyptian who was mistreating a Hebrew slave. At Horeb, also called Mount Sinai, God revealed
himself and sent Moses to set the people of Israel free from their slavery.
Today's passage from the Epistle to the Romans deals with the characteristics of Christian living.
Note that we are called to love each other and to recognize that our lives are completely bound
up in the lives of our brothers and sisters.
We are given many ways of ministering and the Eucharist is a model of our ministry in caring for
others and the world. In the Eucharist, by remembering Christ's dying and rising, we become
participants in God's redemptive action. Our own lives are filled with meaning because we share
in his life, death, and resurrection.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Wilma Turner, Jan Place, William, Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Sen. John McCain, Ann Ottesen, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair.
We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing
Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died, especially Bob Harris. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and
in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees
by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially,
our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop;
Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and
far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of St. Andrew's, Newcastle, St. Mary & St. Jude, Northeast Harbor. For all the Deacons of the Diocese of Maine.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
San Diego - (VIII, The Episcopal Church), San Joaquin - (VIII, The Episcopal Church)
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for Sunshine Advent Christian Church, Deer Isle.

As some people are leaving for the winter, I won't be able to see all of you and thank you personally. Thanks for your prayers. My surgery and continuing recuperation have been successful. I also want to thank people who helped more actively by driving me and bringing me food. We are blessed to be together in our Christian community.
