RAMP business accelerator receives $40,000 grant

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the awarding of a second $40,000 state grant to support the development of entrepreneurial classes at the RAMP business accelerator in downtown Roanoke.

The goal of the state's Building Entrepreneurial Economies (BEE) grant program is to encourage micro/small business development and job creation. Virginia Western Community College, one of the public/private partners behind the accelerator initiative, will use the funds in part to develop educational programming to benefit independent contractors, freelancers and other entrepreneurs with part-time work arrangements - those who are classified as members of the "gig economy."

Airport economic impact summary released

The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport had a total economic impact of $480 million as of 2016, more than double the estimate from the 2010 analysis. In total, the airport supported over 3,000 jobs with earnings approaching $140 million.

Although a significant amount of the total economic impact flows from visitor spending, the airport's operations by itself - including multiplier impacts - account for over 1,800 jobs, nearly $100 million in earnings, and $373 million in total economic output.
