The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals, and over 40 pump stations.

North Lafourche Shines at Coastal Day

NLLD Board President Cory Kief and
Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois welcomed visitors to the district's booth at  Coastal Day on June 27.

Hundreds of people attended Terrebonne Parish Coastal Day on June 27 and the North Lafourche Levee District was in the thick of the action.

Board President Cory Kief and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois welcomed visitors to the NLLD exhibit, where they described current and future levee projects in the district, displayed equipment, explained elevation maps and talked about NLLD's role in the Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane System.

"It was really impressive to see so many exhibitors and so much information about all of the coastal protection and restoration efforts going on in Lafourche and Terrebonne. You realize just how much our communities are doing to protect ourselves and how parish lines mean nothing - we are all in this together," says Bourgeois.   "The Levee District was honored to participate in Coastal Day and we hope we helped our visitors learn a little more about the work we do here to protect people, property and our way of life."

NLLD Leaders Meet with Federal Officials on Flood Insurance Reform

NLLD continues its push for flood insurance reform to ensure affordable and sustainable flood insurance for our local residents.

As part the Louisiana Flood Risk Coalition, NLLD Board President Cory Kief, Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois and State Rep. Jerome Zeringue met with key Congressional and agency officials and staff last week to discuss proposed changes to the National Flood Insurance Program and how they could affect coastal communities like ours.

Meetings were held with Rep. Sean Duffy, Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing & Insurance, members of Louisiana's Senate and Congressional delegation, staff of other congressional offices working on NFIP reauthorization, and FEMA officials.

"Affordable flood insurance is critical to the survivability of our local economy and housing market.  We are committed to doing all we can to make this program accessible for the people of Lafourche and Terrebonne and to sustain federal flood insurance,"  Kief says.

The NFIP is up for reauthorization by September and Congressional committees are now considering options for changing the program during the reauthorization process.

New Pump Installed at Parr Pump Station

A new 48" pump at the Parr Pump Station installed by SeaLevel Construction went online June 7.  Improvements at this pump station will provide for better drainage for the Lockport and Valentine area.
