FireVision 20/20:
A 20 Year Reflection and Look into the Future 

Join us November 28-December 2, 2017 at the 7th International Fire Ecology and Management Congress in Orlando, Florida for a 20 year reflection and a look toward the future. See below for conference updates, and please forward this message along to your networks!
Program Updates  
 
The conference begins Tuesday morning with an opening plenary session. Workshops and trainings will be integrated into the schedule throughout the week, and we have a superb line up of special sessions confirmed. On Saturday, you can get outside and explore fire management in Florida by picking one of the seven field trips being planned.

In addition, we have several special events, including a welcome reception, awards luncheon, and movie night with Stephen Pyne. Click here for a tentative schedule.
 
Workshops:
We recently added a new full-day workshop to the program, An Introduction to Wildfire Analyst: Real-time Wildfire Behavior Analysis and Simulations. You can sign up to participate in this workshop, or one of the other pre-registration workshops, when you register. For those who have already registered, email [email protected] if you want to add this new workshop to your schedule.  
 
Field Trips: The Big Cypress field trip is now full! You can be added to the wait list for this trip by emailing Annie Oxarart at [email protected]. A few of the other field trips are filling up quickly as well; register today to secure your spot.

Fire Circles:
17 interactive fire circles discussions will take place throughout the conference. Check out the list of fire circle titles and organizers and start planning which ones you'd like to join.

Fire AFEx Talks: A list of the 10 Fire AFEx presenters is now available! This special plenary session will be held on Wednesday morning and consist of engaging 15-minute presentations that will cover diverse wildland fire topics. 

Yoga: We are excited to announce that Johnny Stowe, a wildlife biologist and certified yoga instructor , will be offering yoga sessions throughout the conference. Consider bringing your yoga mat along if your travel arrangements allow. More details coming soon.
     
Student Activities: SAFE has been busy planning! From a lunch meeting on Tuesday to a post-conference prescribed burn, there are plenty of opportunities for students at the conference. If you are interested in participating in the prescribed burn, apply now! Applications are due tomorrow Friday, September 1.  

Speaker and Poster Presentation Guidelines: Guidelines will be posted on the Congress website tomorrow, September 1. Please pay particular attention to the items related to embedded videos, wifi access, and Research Highlights.
In 2016, Elizabeth Wright was the recipient of the Undergraduate Student Excellence Award. Read more about past awards winners.

Award Nominations  

Help recognize your outstanding colleagues by submitting a nomination for a Lifetime Achievement Award or Student Excellence Award!

Nominations will be accepted through October 1, and awards will be presented at the awards luncheon during the conference.

 

Lifetime Achievement Awards recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to fire ecology and management and have inspired and mentored a generation of fire ecologists. Their contributions may be in research, management, teaching, service, outreach, or a combination of these areas. 


SAFE Student Excellence Awards
recognize a graduate and undergraduate student who demonstrate great service and potential as a professional in the field of fire ecology.

Final Call: Posters and Attached Meetings 
 
The deadline for submitting proposals for Poster Presentations and Attached Meetings is two weeks away, on September 15.

The poster session will take place on Tuesday, and posters will be on display throughout the conference. Combined with our Welcome Reception, the poster session will be a fun event for showcasing your work and networking with colleagues.

Attached Meetings are a great opportunity, especially if you already have several attendees from your agency or organization attending the conference. Meetings can be scheduled in the afternoons, Tuesday-Friday. We'll provide the meeting space, and you'll organize the meeting and invite your participants.
Conference Registration

Regular registration will be open until October 31; after that late registration rates will apply. AFE members receive discounted registration rates, just make sure to log-in to your member account before you register.

Presenters:
Make sure to register by September 21st so we can include your presentation information in the program.
Booking Your Room

The conference will be held at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace in Orlando, Florida. Room nights at the Hilton will be offered at government per diem rates (starting at $129 per night, plus 12.5% tax).

Room reservations must be made by  Monday, October 30, 2017 to receive our reduced conference rate. Keep in mind that these rates are also available for attendees 3 days before or after the conference, if you are planning to enjoy Orlando and the attractions area. 

Got Photos? Win the AFE Photo Contest!

Submit your favorite fire ecology image for the AFE Photo Contest, which is being held in conjunction with the 201 7 Fire Congress. Winning photos will be showcased at the 2017 Fire Cong ress and w ill be included in conference materials (e.g., premiums, program, screensavers) and AFE materials (e.g., websites, publications, displays). Submit your photos using our online submission form by September 15, 2017.
