9/12 - Embracing Change Series: embracingTaking Charge and Letting Go
Join us for a conversation about end-of-life planning. We will address emotions and issues, and will offer expert advice for gaining control of this phase of your life. Speakers will include a psychotherapist, a palliative care specialist, a dying doula, and a representative of The Conversation Project.

Browse the numerous community, artisan and business booths lining College Avenue, alongside the many interesting Rockridge businesses. Bring your friends and stop by our booth!  
 
9/25 - Atul Gawande (live streaming) 
Renowned surgeon Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, public health researcher and author, will address the value of community and opportunities as we grow older, in a live-streamed talk at the Ashby Village office.

9/1 - Bedouin Weaving Slideshow Presentation 
Ashby Village member Joy Totah Hilden will present a slide program showing examples of Bedouin weaving, the weavers at work, and their families.  More info  

9/7 - Presentation on special lens filters and glasses 
A representative from a company specializing in eyewear with absorptive filters that offer more protection against the sun than ordinary sunglasses, will provide a basic understanding of how different lens filters improve contrast and reduce glare. He will also talk about lighting. 

9/24 - Living Room Chat  
Join our "meet and greet" Living Room Chat! An Ashby Village member opens his or her house to those who might be interested in joining Ashby Village. 

10/15 - Toward a Deeper Understanding of North Korea  
Philip Yun, a member of the government working group that managed U.S. policy and negotiations with North Korea, will share his expertise and understanding of North Korea with Ashby Village members and guests.
  
10/6 - Climate Disruption: A Scientific Call to Action 
Andrew Gunther, environmental scientist and popular speaker on climate change issues, will address the local and global implications of climate change.   More info

starting Wednesday 8/30 at 10 AM at Ashby Village.

 

This class is guaranteed to be fun, as well as building strength, increasing flexibility, and improving balance.   
"Dry eye disease deserves serious professional and personal attention. It can be very debilitating and seriously diminish a person's quality of life." Dr. Rachel Bishop, National Eye Institute.   "...evolving knowledge of the nature of tears and their production has led to a better understanding of the causes of dry eye disease and major improvements in treating this all-too-common condition." 
 
Here's a good reason to get on that treadmill or take a hike. Although the study used younger people as subjects, we might try it at Ashby Village and report on our results. French anyone?

Interested in events in the wider world? Meeting the last Wednesday of each month, this group will discuss a current global issue, the topic to be guided by the interests of the participants. The first meeting will address the President's ability to start a nuclear war.

Twenty Ashby Village members and volunteers gathered on a gray August morning in the former Jewelry Mart in San Francisco's south of Market neighborhood. A private tour of one of the most famous tech companies of the Bay Area, Airbnb, was about to start.

Russ Ellis to Speak at UC Retirees' Association Berkeley Luncheon, 9/21

Village member and Professor Emeritus Russ Ellis, whose profile is on display in Ashby Village's "Reframing Aging" exhibition, will 
speak about "Retirement: Then and Now." Following a distinguished academic career, often dominated by words, Russ will describe his new focus on the "extra-verbal world" of images.

New Book by Ashby Village Member
 
"Solitary," published this month by University of California Press, is a rigorous investigation of the use of solitary confinement in the U.S. prison system. The author, forensic psychiatrist Terry Allen Kupers, will discuss the extensive use and devastating impact of Supermax Isolation, at an Ashby Village Arts and Culture event in Spring 2018.

A message from Chana Bloch's husband, Dave Sutter, and her sons: 

Dave, Benjamin and Jonathan would like to invite friends and colleagues of Chana Bloch to an afternoon commemorating her life and work, to be held on the campus of Mills College, where she taught poetry, literature and creative writing for over thirty years. We will gather in the Littlefield Concert Hall at 1:00 PM for a presentation by prearranged speakers, and an an opportunity for others to speak as well. The memorial will be followed by a catered reception on the Concert Hall lawn from 3:00 to 5:00. We will send out invitations soon, with location and parking maps. There is no need to RSVP.

Lee McRae Memorial Concert, 9/23
