Westfest, Fayette County Fair, Church Picnics
Hope this finds all well in polkabeat nation. If you're able to get out, going to a dance or picnic might just lift your spirits. It can also benefit the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Kudos to the following events that will give some or all of the proceeds to help in the relief effort - Fayette County Fair, Sacred Heart Hallettsville Picnic, St. John Fayetteville Picnic, even the Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival in Ohio! Westfest starts Friday night with a preview party featuring Roger Creager and Kevin Fowler. Lots of great polka music Saturday and Sunday with Dujka Brothers, Chris Rybak, Jodie Mikula Orchestra, Praha Brothers, Brave Combo, Jerry Haisler/Melody 5, Czechaholics, Czech & Then Some, and Ennis Czech Boys. Sundae Drivers and Sam Riggs play the Shutdown Party on Sunday night. Check out the festival Facebook page for more information. Fayette County Fair has a great music lineup with Taylor Melayne, Red Ravens, Texas Unlimited Band, Los Kolaches, Jeff Woolsey/Dancehall Kings, Dean Seltzer/Redneck Mothers, Curtis Grimes, Kevin Fowler, Spirit Riders, Keith Hickle, Incredible Music Makers, Sunny Sweeney, Clay Walker. The parade on Saturday has been canceled, and there will not be a carnival. Check out the fair Facebook page for more updates.

Coming in September: Classic or with a bite - Alpine Village Band and its alter-ego, The Dogensteins - have your polka. Theresa Parker interviews band leader Wes Kucera about the move to more edgy music backed by a long tradition of Czech music that started in the old country. Gary E. McKee and Wes Matus pay tribute to record producer extraordinaire Ray Doggett. We remember Johnnie I Krajca and Glen Campbell. Justin Everett reviews a pure country CD by Roger Kirby & The Texas Heartbeat. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the King's death, Justin also shares a story about Elvis and his Texas connections. While shopping for vacation clothes, a husband and wife passed a display of bathing suits. It had been years since she even considered buying a swimsuit, so she asked her husband's advice.
 
"What do you think?" she asked. "Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?"

"Better get a bikini," he replied. "You'd never get it all in one."
