Hello Friends.
It's good to be back. I hope you've enjoyed your summer.
We decided to film on location this month at the Welcome Fiesta, surrounded by faculty, staff and returning students personally greeting the Class of 2020. To this incoming class, we're thrilled you decided to call our school home over the next few years.
I also want to welcome back our second and third year students for a successful 2017-18 year.
I anticipate a very promising school year ahead and look forward to meeting you on campus or around the neighborhood.
Lastly, I would like to take the time to give a special thanks to U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson for appointing me as a member of the Florida Federal Nominating Commission
(JNC)
for the 115th Congress. I will be a member for the Middle District.

On Saturday, August 12, Ave Law paired up with Habitat for Humanity for the day.
Ave Law's Student Bar Association hosted the event and the new 1-L students had their first taste of volunteer work as part of our Ave Law Community. There were 52 students total, including staff who came out in support.

Q:
Where is your hometown?
A:
My hometown is Brooklyn, New York.
Q:
Why did you decide to attend Ave Law?
A:
I decided to attend Ave Law because my life goal is to intertwine my faith with the practice of law. The location of Ave appealed to me because I have ties with family and friends in Naples. The reputable experience of the professors and the smaller class sizes lend a prestige to Ave that is unique. I feel privileged to attend this school, as it has been a great fit for my legal education.
Q:
What are some of your favorite pastimes while living in Naples?
A:
I have a dear Aunt that lives in Naples and my favorite pastime is to visit with her. Around Naples, I love to go to the Botanical Gardens. I also enjoy the Naples beach, especially the Pier. An evening out that I always look forward to includes a walk through the Historic District in Naples and then down to the beach. When I am not enjoying the sites on land, I am SCUBA diving under water in the Gulf and the Atlantic.
Q: What are your plans upon graduation?
A:
Upon graduation, I intend to take the Florida Bar and the New York Bar. I want to keep my options open as to the states that I am able to practice law, as well as D.C. Ultimately, I have not yet decided what career path I may take. I am interested in a clerkship, and the areas of practice that appeal to me are Healthcare Law and Civil Litigation.
Q: How would you describe the Ave Law community?
A:
I would describe the Ave Law community as mentoring, empowering, and positive. The community makes you feel at home, and all of the staff and faculty are standing behind you in support of your achievements. The professors here challenge you to achieve your goals and to be a lawyer of utmost caliber. A positive place to learn is important to me. The atmosphere is critical to manage the stress that comes with obtaining a law degree. The Ave Law campus is serene and the professors take an interest in the personal success of their students, and that is priceless.

In Memoriam and In Our Hearts
|
Mary Adah Malavolti was a special gift to Ave Maria School of Law. We are deeply saddened by her passing. She was a person deep-rooted and passionate in her faith. She was a wonderful asset to the library team, as the Library Assistant. She always took the time to stop and have a thoughtful conversation with those around campus. Mary Adah will remain a part of our Ave Law Community in our daily prayers. We are grateful to have known Mary and will continue to honor her.

In Volume 26 of the Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology, Professor Brett Brosseit wrote a scholarly article concerning the development of critical thinking in law students.
This article addresses some of the primary research that provides the basis for the learning approaches in the ACTLA text. This offers powerful insight into the learning challenges facing today's students and the innovative strategies on which the ACTLA curriculum is built. Click here to view the article.
Professor Brosseit also received the exciting news
that the Carolina Academic Press has just released the groundbreaking Applied Critical Thinking and Legal Analysis ("ACTLA") textbook for distribution. Professor Brosseit and his staff are using it in the classroom beginning this Fall. It is said to be the first evidence-based curriculum designed to optimize law students' academic, intellectual, and professional performance to be published.
Professor Ligia Castaldi gave a conference presentation in two Chilean cities this summer on a paper titled,
The potential creation of a right to abortion in the Inter-American System on Human Rights
. The lecture was a part of a week-long event, "A critical look at the Inter-American System on Human Rights and proposals for its improvement," held by Universidad de San Sebastián in Santiago and Concepciόn (Chile) on May 23-25, 2017.
The event was organized by Legal
Philosophy Professor Max Silva, author of several books and articles on bioethics and the conventionality control doctrine. Professor Castaldi was one of several national and international speakers on the Inter-American Court decisions on the right to life from conception.

Professor Eric Fleetham was recently published for
his piece,
"Treat it Like Book Research: A New Approach to Teaching 1Ls Lexis and Westlaw," 30 The Second Draft 30 (Spring 2017).
Professor Kevin Govern contributed to the SAGE Encyclopedia of Political Behavior (2017). His entry was on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Professor John Raudabaugh, whose area of expertise is Labor Law, was quoted this month in
Bloomberg Law's article titled, "Google Worker Saga Features Clash of Labor, Anti-Bias Laws."

An Advocate
Against Human Trafficking
|
As the Law School's Director of Experiential Education & Associate Clinical Professor, Professor Elizabeth Donovan directs the Clinical
Program and Externship Program. One of her areas of expertise is human trafficking.
In the Human Trafficking Law Clinic, Professor Donovan represents survivors of sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and other violent crimes. She regularly speaks on the topic of human trafficking with academics, lawyers, social service providers, law enforcement, health care providers, and other groups.

"Human Trafficking Awareness Days"
An annual event Professor Donovan has coordinated since the Law School was in Ann Arbor. The event is a combination of a presentation, one-on-one conversations via information tables in St. Thomas More Commons and the Administration Building, a display prepared by staff member, Alla Sullivant, in the Veterans Memorial Law Library, and a collection for a local organization that works with survivors of human trafficking (details to be determined).

"The Persecution and Genocide of Christians in the Middle East" (Angelico Press 2017) is a searing expose of this under-reported war on Christians waged by the Islamic State.
The book of thirteen essays was edited by
Jane F. Adolphe, an Associate Professor and an expert on international human rights with the Holy See's Secretariat of State, Relations with States; along with
Ronald J. Rychlak, a Professor of Law at the University of Mississippi and a member of the Ave Law Board of Governors.
Along with myself, other faculty members who contributed to the book were
Professor Mark Bonner and
Professor Kevin Govern.

The Ave Law Alumni Association hosted a welcome event for our new first year students at the Public House on Immokalee Road. This provided the students an opportunity to bond and get to know some of those who have had the Ave Law experience and successfully graduated. Faculty and staff members were also in attendance.

The law school's annual publication, The
Advocate
, will be in print early September. I wanted to share a glimpse of what you'll expect, and the cover is a great example. Our recent 2017 graduate, Antonette Hornsby and her beautiful children, Layla and Brady, grace the cover as a tribute to Antonette's late huband and the children's late father, Brian Hornsby, a military veteran who died serving our country.
You will find the theme of this year's magazine is love. We love God, we love our country, we love our families, and we seek to serve others.

| Please join us on December 7, 2017 for our second annual event honoring our nation's veterans, on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
Last year, on December 7, 2016, National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, the law school dedicated the school's law library to veterans, renaming it the "Ave Maria School of Law Veterans Memorial Law Library." Inside the library, Ave Law created a Veterans Wall of Honor, located immediately inside the library's front doors. As patrons enter the library, they are greeted by depictions of oversized service members in uniform, representing each of the five military branches. Benefactors, faculty, staff, students, and members of the community may purchase plaques to place on the wall with the name of a veteran. It enables family and friends to memorialize and honor their beloved veterans, keeping the memory of loved ones and their service and sacrifice to our nation alive for many years to come.
