Hurricane Harvey: How You Can Help

Our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Miriam Nisenbaum, Executive Director of NASW/TX, sent this message to Social Workers who want to respond to the devastating floods of Houston and Southeast Texas.

"For Social Workers who want to come to Texas and provide services: The Governor of Texas has temporarily suspended the need for a Texas Social Work license ONLY if you are working in a hospital and in some cases if you are certified to accept Medicaid.

NASW/TX is asking the appropriate authorities to temporarily suspend the need for a Texas License across the board so that all licensed, out-of-state folks can assist. However, this has not occurred yet.  You can check our website for updates which we are doing several times a day at www.naswtx.org."

DMHAS Transfer Begins

The DMHAS transfer from the Department of Human Services to the Department of Health officially took  effect this Monday, August 28th. The transition will take place gradually and is  expected to be completed by the end of October.

NASW-NJ and a near-unanimous group of mental health and addictions providers had opposed this transfer due to its abrupt, ill-timed, and poorly thought out nature. The Assembly passed a resolution to block it and the Senate was scheduled to cast the final vote to block the transfer last Friday. Unfortunately, Senate President Sweeney cancelled the vote on Thursday  due to inadequate attendance. This represents a win for Christie at the cost of an increased risk of disruption of services in NJ. We will be working with our partners to advocate for a successful transition  and will continue to update you as it unfolds.

You can read NASW-NJ's official testimony opposing the transfer by clicking here.
