President's Corner
Dear Kiwanis Club of Omaha,
The wait is finally over! Today is our annual golf tournament fundraiser for our Young Children Priority One grants. YCPO is at the heart of our mission to improve the world one child and one community at a time. This year, we were able to award a total of $25,000 to nine deserving organizations who share our goals to support at-risk youth. Thank you to all of our participants, sponsors, and prize donors. All of your contributions support the 2018 grant program, which we hope to maintain at $25,000 or increase again. Another thank you is in order for Shannon Norman, Rick Berkshire, and everyone else on the golf committee who worked very hard to put this together. Here's a fun fact from the committee since we are starting in the morning this year: Based on the forecast, if you play quick enough you should be able to make it back inside before it hits ninety degrees outside...challenge accepted!
Joyce Swanson, our club's first female member, will be recognized at this Friday's meeting (July 21st) for 30 years of membership! We look forward to honoring Joyce and hearing her perspective on the club's evolution over the years. Our guest speaker that day will be Rachel Halbmeier, who is in charge of the Riverfront Development Project along the Missouri River where Rick's Boatyard and Storz used to occupy. Bring your best suggestions and wildest dreams for the location because Rachel isn't ruling anything out just yet!
On July 28th, our regular Friday meeting will be held at the Lauritzen Gardens. I know it may be challenging for some members to travel that far over the lunch hour but we only had 12 RSVPs as of the end of the day on Friday. This is a unique opportunity to get a more intimate tour of the Lauritzen Gardens and we really need a stronger showing from our club. If you are out of town for business or going on a cruise, cancel your trips right now and RSVP for this event instead! In all seriousness though, if you are in town on July 28th, please make this a priority so we can proudly represent the Kiwanis Club of Omaha. Have a great week!

LAST MEETING
"Think Whole Person Healthcare"
At our last meeting on July 7th, we heard from Nigel O'Mahony, VP of Marketing at Think Whole Person Healthcare. Mr. O'Mahony gave up the history behind the concept of Think by going back to the 1940's when the leading causes of death were infectious disease and traumatic injuries. These were treated in hospital settings. Skip forward to current day and our leading cause of death is chronic illness. Chronic illness, in the perspective of the creators of Think, should be managed, and they encourage regular visits with a PCP to manage a chronic illness instead of emergency visits to treat a resulting problem from a chronic illness. He stated that we are living in a detached specialist driven society and patients are numbers not people. People should have a say in their healthcare.
Think has 48,000 patients with an average age of 64. When they save insurance companies and Medicare money with their method of management, they are rewarded with a portion of the money saved.
