A Message from Meher McArthur, Creative Director

Over the years, the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden has promoted peace and tranquility through its meditation classes, tea ceremonies and other educational programs. In 2016, the garden was honored by Green Legacy Hiroshima with the gift of a camellia cutting taken from a tree that survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The camellia in our garden serves as a powerful reminder of the need to work towards peace on a global level.

This fall, the garden will embark on a Peace Initiative working with Sue DiCicco to launch the Pasadena chapter of her International Peace Crane Project, in which origami cranes are folded as offerings of peace, hope and love to Hiroshima and beyond. On Sunday August 6, marking the 72nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, we will officially launch the garden as a Garden for Peace, and begin a series of programs focused on cultivating peace and global understanding. We will also celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace on Thursday September 14 at the garden with tea and paper crane folding.
