The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia's mission is to grow  philanthropy
to respond to critical need and seed innovation in the region.

From the Desk of Eileen Ellsworth

We have terrific news to share with you about the phenomenal growth that the Community Foundation has enjoyed during our 2017 fiscal year which we just completed on June 30.  Indeed, we have just marked the most successful year in the Community Foundation's 39 year history.

Our grant making levels rose to $4.75 million. Our asset base rose to $47 million.  Contributions to the Community Foundation rose to $12 million.  On every dimension of impact and success, we have once again grown to record levels, which is simply fantastic news for our community.  Our mission to grow philanthropy to respond to critical needs and seed innovative solutions has never been more relevant, and the community has never been more responsive to the call.  Thank you to our donors, stakeholders, nonprofits, and constituents.  None of this would have been possible without each and every one of you.

Looking forward to the fall, we are busy preparing for two big events.  On September 14 we will host the next Innovation Breakfast - "High Skill, High Demand, High Wage - Skills Based Education Comes of Age."  Thank you to Access National Bank for once again sponsoring this signature leadership series.  Click here for tickets and additional information.  And on October 6, we welcome you to attend our annual Raise the Region Gala where we will celebrate the growth of philanthropy in our community, our dedicated partners, and our 2017 Community Leadership Award winners Mark and Brenda Moore. Tickets and sponsorships for the Gala are now also available, so please visit www.cfnova.org/gala.

In 2018 the Community Foundation will celebrate its 40th anniversary and we are collecting stories to help celebrate that milestone accomplishment.  If you have ever engaged with our Community Foundation in any way (large or small) as a donor, board member, or volunteer, or if you have a story you would like to share with us about the Community Foundation's history, please contact tara.nadel@cfnova.org.  We'd so appreciate your input!

We are a region of ideas, a wellspring of reinventions and re-imaginations.  A caring lot.  A generous force for good.  At the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, we are infinitely inspired by this community. And we are grateful to all of you! THANK YOU for the role you have played and will continue to play in helping to shape the future of our region.  Enjoy our July 2017 newsletter!

CommunityLeadershipCOMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
I n May, the Community Foundation's Innovation Breakfast introduced the idea of Community Wealth Building to our nearly 200 guests who attended the event featuring Ted Howard of the Democracy Collaborative and Yanique Redwood of the Consumer Health Foundation.  We are pulling together a design team to help think through a regional strategy to develop our community wealth building muscles here in Northern Virginia.  This Wednesday, July 26 we will welcome Reggie Gordon who runs the Community Wealth Building office in Richmond, VA, to share his experience with us.  If you are interested in joining the conversation about how our community can come together to create jobs for the "hard to employ" segment of our workforce, please do so by registering here.

Robert Lazaro
This is an interview with Robert W. Lazaro, Jr., Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, who recently sat down with us to discuss his involvement with the Community Foundation.

How does your fund at the Community Foundation benefit your organization?

The Northern Virginia Regional Commission undertakes work that has an impact across multiple jurisdictions in an increasingly diverse community of 2.4 million residents. By having a relationship with a well known, well-respected organization like the Community Foundation, it lets interested donors know their generosity will be used for the purpose given.

Nikhil attends Indiana University in Bloomington at the Kelley School of
Nikhil Prasad
B u siness, majoring in Financial Economics and minoring in Informatics/Information Systems. "Throughout my internship at the Community Foundation, I learned a lot about what it takes to raise a whole community through grants and donations. I worked on cleaning up and adding to the Community Foundation's database, while also looking up various influential contacts in the region that may be interested in philanthropy.  A major project I completed was to research how to do community wealth building in Northern Virginia, based on efforts in Cleveland and Richmond. Finally, I organized new materials for the Future Fund membership group. I had a productive internship and learned about nonprofits and their role in philanthropy."
Madison Wolff
Madison, a recent graduate of Loudoun Valley High School, will attend the University of South Carolina in the fall majoring in international relations. "My experience interning at the Community Foundation really helped me mature and grow as an adult and allowed me to see what it was like to work at an actual office. This opportunity foreshadowed the type of environment and people I can see myself working with in the future." Madison's high school required her to complete volunteer hours for a community service or career development project. At our office, Madison's work focused on documenting press clippings and news mentions, and she worked diligently to compile information that we will use during our 40th Anniversary celebration 2018. "The tasks I completed really helped me become more familiar with technology and computers, which will greatly benefit me in the future with college assignments. I was lucky that my community sponsor, Tara Nadel, attended the event where I presented the work that I completed, which made me grateful for picking such a wonderful organization to dedicate my time towards."

Keep 5 Local is a nationwide trend of giving back 5% of your total estate to your community through your local community foundation via a simple bequest in your will. In doing so, you are ensuring your hometown has what it needs to continue to be a great place to live for you, your family, your friends, your colleagues, your neighbors, and future generations.

A bequest is a revocable gift, which means it can be changed or modified at any time. Bequests are exempt from federal estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs. The best part? Bequests are an easy, proven, and effective way to leave a lasting legacy of giving. Bequests cost you nothing today, but you will have provided a critical source of ongoing support for our region's future.

Choose to give back 5% today. Visit our web site for sample bequest language to include in your new or current will or trust or call Eileen Ellsworth at 703-879-7635 for more information.
