This is the time of year when the sound of middle schoolers running through the woods can be heard on selected afternoons as local schools participate in cross country meets.  

If you see "Slow Down Sam" as you approach the park entrance gates PLEASE SLOW DOWN!  

All Blue Jay trails will still be open, but please step aside and cheer on these 
hard-working kids as they run past!

Big Sweep!

October 7, 2017
9 a.m - Noon

Volunteers MUST register in advance for this 9 a.m.-noon Lakeside Trash Pick-up. 

Volunteers report to the Blue Jay Center, where they will receive supplies, data cards, information and maps to shoreline locations for litter removal. Big Sweep at Blue Jay is appropriate for ages 8 and up - families, groups or individuals; however, it is composed of litter removal on rocky shorelines in what may be hot and/or humid conditions. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be part of an organized group with a participating adult supervisor or be accompanied by a guardian. Age and health should be considered when volunteering for this event.

Nature  Play Day 


Tuesday, September 12
10-Noon Theme:  Color

Parents or grandparents with young children are invited to come to Blue Jay for a (warm season) monthly thematic Nature Play Day.  The focus will be on free play, which means having self-guided activities with no start and end time and flow from kids' creativity.  Education staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance.  Activities are planned for 3-7 year olds, but younger children are welcome to attend.  Meet in the Natural Play Area-follow signs from the playground parking lot.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.  Nature Play Days at Blue Jay is a free walk-up activity from 10a.m.-Noon and requires no pre-registration.  If weather conditions seem uncertain, be sure to check Facebook or call (919) 870-4330 before coming to make sure the Nature Play Day is still happening!

Spiderific Hike

We're going on a spider hunt!  Join Blue Jay staff to learn how to mist webs and use other tools to collect spiders to ID.  This program is FREE in honor of Take a Child Outside Week, but preregistration is required (not stroller friendly).

Project WILD
Tuesday, September 19, 2017 
 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.



Facilitated by NC Wildlife Resources educator Casey Williams, this 6-hour Project WILD workshop is for adults interested in teaching young people about wildlife. Participants receive the Project WILD K-12 educator guide along with materials specifically about North Carolina wildlife. The educator guide contains more than 150 hands-on activities that focus on wildlife and natural resources. Project WILD workshops are open to all interested educators, including classroom teachers, environmental educators, resource agency staff, park personnel, college students and faculty, and youth leaders. Bring a bag lunch. This 6-hour workshop counts as a Criteria I workshop in the NC Environmental Education Certification Program.

Growing Up WILD
Thursday  December 14, 2017 
 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.



Growing Up WILD is geared towards educators of children between the ages of 3-7 years old and is correlated to the National Association for the Education of Young People Standards and the Head Start Domains. Facilitated by Casey Williams, this 6-hour workshop counts as a Criteria I workshop in the NC Environmental Education Certification Program.  CEU credit will be available upon the completion of a homework assignment.  Meet at the Blue Jay Center for Environmental Education and bring a bag lunch.
