The Louisiana and Texas Mine Safety Programs
This month we would like to spotlight our friends at the Louisiana and Texas Mine Safety Programs who we had the pleasure of volunteering and spending time with at the recent Southern Regional Mine Rescue Contest. Jeffrey Hodges is the Louisiana MSHA Mine Safety Program Director and Phyllis Walker is the MSHA Coordinator located at Northshore Technical Community College in Greensburg, Louisiana. Peggy Merritt is an MSHA and First Aid/CPR Field Trainer with the Texas Mine Safety Program located at The University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. Thank you, to our sister programs for all they do to keep their home states safe!

Florida Mine Safety Program Wins 2017 Communicator Award for Safety Video
The Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA) presented the Florida Mine Safety Program with the 2017 Communicator Award for its safety video and training tool, "Confined Spaces in Mining-Authorized Attendants and Practiced Rescue Plans," on May 9, 2017, as part of its 23rd Annual Communicator Awards. Each year, this award is given to communications professionals who exhibit excellence in creativity, and it is of national status and the highest level of prestige in the multimedia and video industry.
"We are proud to earn this great distinction and hope it serves to raise awareness and understanding of safety and rescue plan importance for all miners," said FMSP Mining Program Manager Karen Miller, CMSP.

We were happy to volunteer our time and support at this year's Southern Regional Mine Rescue Contest in New Iberia, Louisiana. Advisory Board Spotlight
This month our advisory spotlight goes to Brianna Barnebee, the communications director for the Florida Mine Safety Program. Brianna is a senior account manager at RB Oppenheim Associates (RBOA), serving clients in the public health, association, technology, education, government and mining industries. Her responsibilities include strategy development and planning, branding and messaging, media relations and issue management, editorial services, social media networking and digital marketing, event planning, production management and client counseling. We're happy to have her advise on communications strategies to promote the Surface Mine Rescue Contest!

My Equipment Is Grandfathered - Wrong!
A lack of understanding OSHA's machine guarding regulations continues to make machine safeguarding one of OSHA's Top 10 violations.
We often hear "our equipment is old and has been grandfathered so it doesn't need guarding." While this may seem logical, it is simply not true. Up until the late 1970's, OSHA did have a few "grandfathered" clauses in its regulations, but these have long since expired. In order to be compliant today, ALL machines must meet minimum OSHA standards, even your old ones.

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) aims to educate those who partake in mining operations by assisting mining companies and mining contractors with their health and safety training. For more than 30 years, the program has operated as a federally-funded grant program under the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), whose mission is to prevent death, disease and injuries in the mining industry. This is done through a variety of training courses, conferences and informational seminars offered by FMSP. These courses highlight proper emergency evacuation plans, health and safety standards and more. FMSP diligently works to ensure that miners working in both Florida metal and nonmetal operations are aware of the health and safety standards and are effectively trained to take precautionary measures. Through a collaborative effort, FMSP and MSHA Educational Field and Small Mine Services (EFSMS) work together to reduce the frequency and severity of mining accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
