Hillsborough Honors Three Eagle Scouts from Troop 186

Eagle
Scouts were honored with proclamations at the July 11th Township Committee. Honorees included Samuel Radowitz, Zachary Seery and Connor Welch.
Eagle
Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy
Scouts of America (BSA). The designation "
Eagle
Scout" has a long history since its founding over one hundred years ago. Only four percent of Boy
Scouts are granted this rank after a lengthy review process. The requirements necessary to achieve this rank take years to fulfill.

Green Living Poster Contest Participants Recognized
At the July 11th Township Committee meeting, young artists were presented with ribbons and prizes
in recognition of the artwork they submitted for a poster contest held at the 2017 Green Living and Wellness Fair.
Participants were asked to design a poster with a "Green Living" message and were judged on message content.

Hillsborough Ranked Among America's 30 Safest Cities to Raise a Child
Hillsborough Township ranked in the top 30 "Safest Cities in America to Raise a Child", according to Mayor Carl Suraci at a recent Township Committee meeting.
"We are honored to announce that Hillsborough Township was ranked 22nd Safest City to Raise a child," stated Mayor Suraci.
The SafeWise Report released its "30 Safest Cities to Raise a Child" report on June 26, 2017. To compile this report, SafeWise reviewed reported sex offender concentration, state graduation rates, overall school quality ranking, and FBI violent crime data. Also, they eliminated all cities with fewer than 10,000 residents and those communities that did not report complete crime numbers to the FBI.
"We are pleased to be recognized once again by SafeWise. This recognition is a direct result of the professional and proactive police work by all the fine men and women in the department that are committed to serve our residents," stated Hillsborough Police Chief Darren Powell.

2016 Township Financial Audit Completed
Financial Records Found in Compliance
"Hillsborough Township's 2016 Audit has been completed and once again we are pleased to report that the auditors have found the Township's ledgers in financial compliance. This year's audit did not have any significant findings to warrant an audit comment," reported Mayor Carl Suraci Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.
Suplee, Clooney & Company, the Township's Municipal Auditor, conducted the audit, which was completed in June. Upon completion, the audit report was submitted to the Township and, as required by New Jersey State Law, reviewed and acknowledged by resolution. Also, the audit summary will be published in the newspaper, as required by law, and will be made available on the Hillsborough Township website.

Celebrate Hillsborough's Newest Centenarian - Mary Buckshaw
Help celebrate and honor the Township's newest Centenarian, Mary Buckshaw by sending her a Birthday Card
Lifelong Hillsborough Resident Mary Buckshaw is celebrating her 100th birthday on July 23rd and all Hillsborough residents are invited to honor and celebrate this milestone by sending her a card.
Mary has been an active member of the Hillsborough Community for more that 80 years and has been a member of several township groups since their inception including the Flagtown Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Hillsborough Senior Citizens Chapter B, the Rockettes and Rocket dance group as well as the original Senior Club founded in 1974.

Hillsborough Township's Annual Fishing Derby and Family Camp Out - Friday, August 4th
Registration Now Open
"The Annual Fishing Derby and Family Camp Out will be held on Friday, August, 4th at Ann Van Middlesworth Park," announced Mayor Carl Suraci at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.
"All residents are invited to the Annual Family Camp Out and are encouraged to pack your fishing poles for the David L. Thomas, Sr. Memorial Fishing Derby," added Mayor Suraci.
"This event is a summer highlight for many of our families in the Hillsborough," continued Mayor Suraci.
The Fishing Derby will run from 5-7 pm and the registration fee is $5.00 per child. The Camp Out fee is $10 per person and includes dinner and breakfast. Registration and additional information is available at the Parks and Recreation website.
"We look forward to seeing you all there," concluded Mayor Suraci.

Coupons for access to drop off at the Auten Road Facility are available at the Hillsborough Township Department of Public Works (DPW) office, located at 21 East Mountain Road, Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm.
- Coupons are distributed on a first come first serve basis

Beat the Heat -- High Temps Can Make You Sick
Today is a hot one around the Garden State. As everyone continues to go about his or her daily routines, it's important to remember that body temperature can rise to a dangerous level, making you extremely sick. Heat-related illness and deaths are preventable. Know the signs before you become a statistic.
Signs of heat-related illness (CDC)
- Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; fast, weak pulse; nausea or vomiting; fainting.
- What to do: move to a cooler location; lie down and loosen clothing; apply cool, wet cloths to as much of the body as possible; sip water; and seek medical attention if the person vomits and continues vomiting
- Heat stroke/sun stroke: high body temperature (above 103 degrees Fahrenheit); hot, red skin - dry or moist; rapid and strong pulse; possible unconsciousness
- What to do: CALL 911 immediately and follow the operator's directions - this is a medical emergency; move the person to a cooler place; reduce the person's body temperature with cool cloths or a bath; do NOT give liquids
Tips to prevent heat illness:
- Always check for children and pets when leaving your car. Hot cars can kill. Leaving the windows down does not prevent them from getting heatstroke.
- Air conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death.
- Drink extra water (fluids) all day and less tea, coffee, cola and alcoholic beverages. Do NOT wait until you feel thirsty to drink - it may be too late!
- Reduce or schedule outdoor activity for cooler times of the day, before 10am and after 6pm.
- During outdoor activities, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water or other fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting, open-woven clothes.
- Wear a vented hat in the sun to protect yourself from the sun's rays. Don't forget sunscreen!
- If you have a chronic medical problem, ask your doctor about how to deal with the heat.

- The successful applicant will be invited to attend: Annual Comedy Night Fundraiser.
