USA Swimming and the USA Swimming Foundation Welcome New President and CEO: Tim Hinchey

USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch describes Tim Hinchey as having chlorine in his veins.
That's a biological phenomenon that will come in handy in Hinchey's new role as President and CEO of USA Swimming. He begins his new journey after spending the past six years as President of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Colorado Rapids.
A longtime swimmer - learning as a 5-year-old before joining a club at age 9 - Hinchey said he plans to take the first six months or so observing and traveling to meet members of the swimming community...
The 2017 Make a Splash Tour
Presented by Phillips 66

The USA Swimming Foundation once again hit the road to share the vital message of learning to swim. The 9th Annual Make a Splash Tour presented by Phillips 66 visited 5 cities to bring awareness to the importance of water safety and teaching children how to swim. You can see the tour in action by checking out our comprehensive Flipboard with photos, videos, and media from across the Tour!

Houston, Texas -
The tour kicked off with an awesome weekend in Houston, Texas that included visits to the Harris County Aquatic Center, the YMCA of Greater Houston, The Julia C. Hester House, the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, and Dad's Club.

Rowdy Gaines, Cullen Jones, and Simone Manuel helped spread the lifesaving message of learn-to-swim. Activities included a panel discussion at Phillips 66 headquarters, a press conference where both the Mayor of Houston and a Commissioner pledged to learn how to swim in 2017, and getting into the water with hundreds of Houston-area children!

Los Angeles, California - The second stop of the 2017 saw Missy Franklin join the tour! She and Rowdy Gaines visited several sites for a press conference, breakfast, and presentations before jumping in the pool at the Wilmington YMCA.

New Orleans, Louisiana  - Next on the tour was a visit to the gulf city of NOLA! Cullen and Rowdy talked to the media, attended a luncheon, and visited with the parents and swimmers at the Belle Chasse YMCA. The local media covered the event throughout the day and truly helped to spread awareness about the importance of learning to swim.

Miami & Fort Lauderdale, Florida - The final tour stops were a whirl of activity. Cullen and Rowdy once again advocated for the importance of swim lessons. This time they were joined by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Shultz.

In addition to the extensive media coverage and tour footage, the USA Swimming Foundation produced a video about the reasons behind the tour, and Make a Splash. Take a look at some of the highlights from this year's Houston Tour stop:

USA Swimming Foundation Announces 5-10% Increase in Swimming Ability Among U.S. Children

We're excited to announce a 5-10 percent improvement in overall swimming ability from our previous findings in 2010, according to a new study regarding swimming ability amongst America's youth conducted by the University of Memphis and University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

However, there is still much work to be done as nearly 64% of African-American children, 45% of Hispanic children, and 40% of Caucasian children have no to low swimming ability, putting them at risk for drowning. A concerning finding was that 87% of swimmers with no or low ability plan to go to a swimming facility this summer at least once and 34% plan to swim 10 or more times this summer.

Check out our infographic of study highlights below, or click here for more study results.

The USA Swimming Foundation Awards an Additional $130,000 in Grant Funding to Make a Splash Local Partners

To help swim lesson providers nationwide offer lessons to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity, the  USA Swimming Foundation has awarded approximately $475,000 through its 2017 grant fund. After awarding $342,000 in March 2017, the Foundation was able to fund an additional $130,000 this summer. Since 2007, the Foundation has awarded more than $4.4 million dollars to help fund learn-to-swim programs across the country.

Through USA Swimming Foundation funding this year, more than 35,000 children will be served through grants provided to 114 Make a Splash Local Partners. This is the most children the USA Swimming Foundation has served through its annual grant fund in a given year, and the most Make a Splash Local Partner grantees. Over the last 10 years, more than 4.9 million children have received formalized swim instruction through the Make a Splash Local Partner network.
This year alone, our goal is to see 1 million children take lessons through Make a Splash Local Partners, and these additional funds will help more children experience the life-saving gift of swimming. To learn more about the USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash initiative please  click here.
