Harrington Discovery Institute announces the call for proposals for the 2018 Harrington Rare Disease Scholar Award.

The Harrington Rare Disease Scholar Award was created to advance breakthrough research into cures for rare diseases. The program is sponsored by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company and overseen by Harrington Discovery Institute.

Letters of Intent are now being accepted through midnight on July 19, 2017.

Stem Cell Metabolism: a potential target for Cancer therapy

Although all cells rely on metabolism for their energy supply, in stem cells, the metabolic pathways appear to play a crucial role in balancing stem cell maintenance and differentiation. A complete understanding of the underlying mechanisms will not only provide important insights into this relationship, but may also contribute to the development of novel therapeutic strategies for patients with cancer or other lifethreatening illnesses in which tissue generation is disturbed.

Most cancer cells, for example, exhibit increased glycolysis. This appears to be due to defects in mitochondria, abnormal expression of metabolic enzymes and the low oxygen tension in the tumor microenvironment. This increased dependence of cancer cells on glycolytic pathways allows the development of small molecules that preferentially kill cancer cells by pharmacological inhibition of glycolysis.

A big step towards an artificial yeast genome

The DNA of eukaryotes—animals, plants, fungi and so on—is both more abundant and more complex than that. It may have hundreds of millions, even billions, of letters and it is organised into several elongated chromosomes inside a cell’s nucleus. Synthesising a eukaryote’s genome is thus a far harder task than creating its prokaryote equivalent.

But if biology is ever to be brought within the realm of technology in the ways that physics and chemistry have been, it is an essential task.

The Brain Prize recognises highly original and influential advances in any area of neuroscience, including fundamental research on molecular, cellular, physiological and pharmacological mechanisms, studies of behaviour and cognition, advances in technology for monitoring the nervous system, translational research on the application of basic knowledge to clinical and other problems of humankind, and clinical research on the causes, treatment and prevention of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

The Brain Prize 1 mio. Euro is a personal research prize awarded annually by The Lundbeck Foundation.
