Today was graduation day for our seniors. Congratulations to the Class of 2017 and to their parents! We wish our seniors the best of luck as they head off to college and the workforce. To celebrate, tonight is the All Night Grad Party (ANGP) -- a spectacular graduation party with countless games and activities, swimming, and prize winning -- which allows kids to commemorate graduation with their friends in a safe manner. Even as the school year is coming to a close, PTSA
President Chrissie Lavin is still hard at work wrapping up projects, attending meetings and making sure we have a smooth transition to next year.
Her energy level, dedication and commitment to Langley should be an inspiration to us all.
She has devoted the past school year to supporting our entire Langley community, from donuts and coffee for the staff to helping organize Career Day for our students to organizing PTSA meetings and attending coffees to keep our parents informed. Chrissie has spent endless hours to make our school a better place. She manages to do all this with a friendly disposition and an ever-present smile. She is truly deserving of our gratitude and appreciation.
Thank you, Chrissie, for all you have done for Langley!

Each year, the PTSA recognizes outstanding students with two different awards:
The Scott Stone Memorial Award for Outstanding Citizenship is awarded annually to two Langley seniors who throughout their years at Langley demonstrated qualities of outstanding character, leadership and humanitarianism. The winners, nominated by Langley faculty and selected by Langley administrators, have greatly contributed to the community with random acts of kindness, friendly rapport with peers and faculty, compassion for others, and by serving as positive role models. In memory of Langley science teacher Scott Stone, this award, presented with $500, is given to students whose enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and citizenship made Langley a better place to go to school. This year's winners are: Mary Margaret Chalk and Elena Marcovici.
Reflecting LHS's emphasis on service, the
PTSA Service Award
recognizes and awards $500 to a student in his or her junior year who has demonstrated
excellence in volunteerism
and who is
committed to making a difference in our community

 Broadway has the Tony's and
high schools have the Cappies, which recognize and celebrate high school theater. Last Sunday, the
2016-2017 Cappies award recipients were announced. Saxon Stage's dazzling production of the musical
Gypsy won awards for
Lead Actress in a Musical (Jamie Goodson) and
Best Male Dancer (Cuinn Casey).
Congratulations to our Langley winners and to all of the members of cast and crew.

eco-opportunity for students

Fairfax County's 3rd Environmental Education Conference is
Thur, June 29. Hosted at the
National Wildlife Federation in Reston, the conference is free for high school and college students. Students will enjoy a
sustainable meal, learn how to get involved in
environmental education initiatives in their own community, and will hear from
prominent keynote speakers. To register, click

great summer project -- gather up used crayon bits and pieces!
Once again this year, Langley is working on a pyramid-wide service project to collect and recycle used crayons for The Crayon Initiative. This program collects unwanted crayons, re-manufactures them and provides them to pediatric wards at children's hospitals. Last year, the Langley pyramid schools collected approximately 640 pounds of crayons for The Crayon Initiative. Our students' used crayons were melted down to become over 3000 crayon packs distributed to children's hospitals all over the country! The Crayon Initiative was featured in a segment on the Today Show last year which can be viewed here.
Crayons will be collected from all the
elementary schools and the
middle school in this pyramid.
LHS students will sort and mail the crayons to The Crayon Initiative as their first service project of the new school year in August 2017. If you have used crayons at home,
please donate them by placing crayons in the
collection box located in the Student Services Dept, Trailer 34.
