LUM Students Learn About Moon Landing
48th Anniversary of the Moon Landing - 7/20/1969

Forty-eight years ago today, Neil Armstrong landed the lunar module Eagle on the Moon as a part of the Apollo 11 mission. TODAY, Forty-eight years LATER, the student enrolled in the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program students visited the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering at Purdue. At Purdue they learned about the Apollo 11 mission, saw a full-scale replica of the Apollo 1 command module & a moon rock, walked in Neil Armstrong's footprints on the moon, explored the surface of Mars, and took a picture with the college-aged Neil Armstrong statue (see above).

It was an incredible study trip for the students. They now have dreams of attending college, studying aeronautic & astronautic engineering, joining NASA, and someday walking in space. Thanks to the Purdue School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Purdue Space Day program for hosting and inspiring our 5th Quarter students. Countdown to LUM Camp 2017
When I Grow Up! — August 1 -4

It’s time again for LUM Camp, and this year’s theme is When I Grow Up!

LUM Camp is an overnight camp from August 1 - 4 for boys and girls 8, 9 and 10 years old.  Attending are children who are from families served by Lafayette Urban Ministry. Our camp is one of Indiana’s most well-respected summer camp programs for at-risk children.

This year as the theme When I Grow Up! indicates, the LUM Camp staff will urge our LUM Campers to think, ponder and dream about their futures by exploring careers that match their interests. Please, won’t you help build their futures by offering to them the gift of LUM Camp?

Eileen Hession Weiss is Back!
Eileen is Serving as Assistant LUM Camp Director

Eileen Hession Weiss is a familiar face at LUM, who has returned to assist with LUM Camp 2017.

Eileen officially retired in 2013. She served as the LUM business manager four years and prior to that was a LUM project manager for 21 months in 2000 & 2001. At LUM, Eileen has directed Jubilee Christmas, Tax Assistance Program, Community Thanksgiving Celebration and Hunger Hike; and assisted with LUM Camp & LUM Follies. One of the highlights of her career was when she was elected to serve as the City Clerk for the City of Lafayette from 1984-1995.

Although Eileen now enjoys retirement closer to her grandchildren, Campbell Rose, Max, and Nicole, she has been willing to return to LUM to assist when needed.  Joe Micon, LUM executive director shared, "we're thrilled and honored to have Eileen back — even if it is only for a few weeks."
