SERVICE

Sunday, July 23, 10:00 AM  "You Are the Salt of the Earth," Diane Cameron

Human life is not possible without sodium chloride, and salt is the only mineral found in every cell of the human body, so salt is a biological necessity. Decency and kindness are also necessities, hence we admire "the salt of the earth."

Diane Cameron is a writer/teacher/coach and a Times Union columnist. She is passionate about social justice, advocacy for people living in poverty, and helping family caregivers. Author of "Never Leave Your Dead" and "Out of the Woods", she loves talking with us at Albany UU.

Music: Sean Obach

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Reading of John Hersey's "Hiroshima"
Sunday, August 6, 11:00 AM
Hosted at Albany UU by Rev. Sam Trumbore

This event is free and open to the public. Those interested in reading can sign up to participate when they arrive. The reading will be held outside, please bring folding chairs. Rain site is Channing Hall.

On August 6, 1945 the United States of America used the atomic bomb for the first time to destroy the city of Hiroshima, Japan; on August 9, the U.S. used the atomic bomb again on Nagasaki, Japan. Over 200,000 people died immediately in the two bombings and over a hundred thousand more died in the following decades as a result of the effects of the radiation.

Hiroshima, by John  Hersey tells the story of the bombing on August 6, 1945 by following the story of six of the survivors. The book version has been in print since 1945.

Co-sponsored by the Poetry Motel Foundation, the Tom Paine Chapter Veterans for Peace, Upper Hudson Peace Action, Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace. For more information, contact Dan Wilcox, 482.0262, [email protected].

Green Sanctuary suggests:

Buy locally so that 80% of your money will stay in the community. (Otherwise, that money goes elsewhere.) Local farmers' markets are great places to buy fresh food. Small food items, like blueberries, raspberries, chopped pepper and onions, beans, can be washed, dried, spread on cookie sheets, then frozen for winter consumption. Put the items into freezer bags and squeeze out as much air as possible. Also consider freezing liquid items like stock or vegetable juices in ice cube trays, then pop cubes out into freezer bags.  Remember to label and date them.
Please continue to bring your recyclables to the collection box in the coatroom at AlbanyUU.  Our collection  goes on all summer.
How is your DO MORE PLEDGE coming along?  Let GSC know.  Send your accomplishments to Betsy at [email protected], and let me know if I can announce them.
Do you have a suggestion for green living that you would like to include in Preview?  Send it to Betsy at [email protected] .  Let me know if I can publish your suggestion with your name.
Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.   Howard Zinn

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NOTES
-Leah Purcell, Director of Religious Education

Keep up with what's happening for children and families and other events by visiting

We need adult volunteers to staff Summer Session - our more casual program for children in Pre-k through 5th grade. Parents and current or past RE volunteers are eligible. Each week we have art projects and free play in room 24/25. When we have presenters for workshops, those are usually held next door in room 26.

Do you have a talent or skill that could be a hands-on project for the kids? Cooking, woodworking, making or assembling things, science, sewing, crafts, etc. - Leah Purcell can help you create a workshop with any skill like that. You can volunteer to staff or present a workshop one Sunday or as many as you like. Email Leah at [email protected] or indicate your interest to volunteer in room 24/25 or lead or assist a workshop in room 26 on the sign-up sheet on the Summer Bulletin Board in the main level hallway.

Surveys about your RE experience
Parents/caretakers and RE Guides - Have you filled out your survey yet? Please check your email for a parent/caretaker survey to help the REC  and Leah make our RE program even better.

Now is the time to register your child for RE for 2017-18
You can register on line  HERE, pick up a form at the RE office or Leah can mail it to you.

As always, feel free to contact Leah Purcell at [email protected] with questions.
