Question #14: How to keep your picnic food safe?

The summer months are upon us which means it is time to do a lot of outdoor eating. This season as you prepare for your picnics and barbecues remember warm weather events also present opportunities for foodborne bacteria to thrive. As food heats up in summer temperatures, bacteria multiply rapidly.

To keep yourself, your family, and your friends safe from foodborne illness during warm-weather months, safe food handling is critical. Read on for simple food safety guidelines for transporting your food to the picnic site.

4-H Youth Development

4-H Youth Development strives to equip young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become successful adults. Effective communications and public speaking skills are vital as youth develop into tomorrow's leaders. Currituck County 4-H staff and volunteers worked with 4-H members to write, rehearse and deliver presentations at the recently held Northeast District 4-H Activity Day. Currituck 4-H'ers brought home 12 medals, six of them gold, from the competition held at North Pitt High School in Pitt County, NC.

In May, Currituck County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, NC Cooperative Extension Staff, and special guests gathered at an outdoor celebration to dedicate and officially open the Currituck Demonstration Garden to visitors and county residents. This "Kaleidoscope Style" garden is a teaching garden displaying landscape design options arranged by color. Each portion of the round garden space is dedicated to a different landscape color pairing. 


Family & Consumer Sciences

Are you busy? Too busy to prepare a delicious, made from scratch meal for your family every night? N.C. Cooperative Extension has just the thing for you! Join us for one or all of our "Families on the Fly" Class Series. Each class will be held at the Currituck County Extension Center from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Participants will learn the ins and outs of different meals that can be prepared ahead of time or are ready to eat when you get home. Classes will be hands-on and you will leave with meals for your family and meal ideas.
