This Week at Christ Church

This Sunday

Help a child attending Arcola Elementary School get a great start to the school year: Adopt a backpack filled with school supplies! Simply take an envelope from the Outreach table in the hallway, it has all the directions you need (suggested donation is $15). The Outreach team will purchase the supplies and we'll fill the backpacks in August. 80% of Arcola students qualify for subsidized meals - so some families would not otherwise afford needed school supplies. Thank you! Questions? Contact Virginia Sheard at [email protected].

This Week

Give Choir a Try this Summer! Our summer choir begins with a rehearsal at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings in the choir room, followed by the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist.  All are most welcome to sing in the summer choir -- in fact, this is a wonderful time to "try out" the choir without the commitment of a mid-week rehearsal.  Summer Choir will run for seven weeks from June 18 through the end of July (July 30). Questions? Send an e-mail to Teddy Guerrant ([email protected]).

Thank you, Vacation Bible School Volunteers and Staff! Thank you to all who helped make Vacation Bible School Possible this year! We'd like to give special thanks to our adult volunteers: Cindy Winder, Kitty Shuler, Madison Chase, Dwight Allen, Andrea McGray, Stephanie Feller, Nancy Gagne and Angeles Lara. We also couldn't have made it without our youth volunteers: Olivia Deleen, Casey Kilpatrick, Ryan Carr, Kaia Frassrand, and Andrea Ciconte.

From the Flower Guild Dear friends in Christ, do you enjoy the welcoming flowers on the altars, in the hallway and in the offices?  Dedicating the flowers on the altar is a wonderful way both to honor a loved one and support the Flower Guild.  We currently have 18 unclaimed Sundays.  Please help by signing up on the chart on the main office door. Interested in knowing more about the Flower Guild? Contact Nora Buckley ([email protected]).

Help get the word out about CCPK Christ Church needs your help in getting the word out about our parish. If you have an interest in our messaging, web site, social media, branding, and related issues, please consider joining or offering to help the Communications Committee.  Please contact Ken Amaditz of the Vestry for more information ([email protected]).

Only 3 Sundays left to show your love through popsicles! - sign up for July 30, Aug 20 & 27 to set up and take down the popsicle and lemonade tables outside (or downstairs if weather is bad). Popsicles and detailed instructions provided! Sign up will be in the hallway near the office door this coming Sunday. Questions? contact Gail Marks at [email protected].

Church expenses are always here, even if you aren't! Paying your pledge before you leave on summer vacation always helps the church's cash flow. If you are going away on vacation, please consider catching up on your pledge! Christ Church appreciates your generosity!

Mark your Calendars for an Organ Recital! On Friday evening, September 1 at 7:30pm (the beginning of the Labor Day weekend) Teddy Guerrant will play an organ recital entitled "A Gallic Sampler: French Organ Music Across Four Centuries" including works by de Grigny, Balbastre, Lefebure-Wely, Franck, Saint-Saens, Widor, Vierne, Mulet, Dupre, Langlais, and Durufle.  The French theme will continue into the light reception following with petits fours and champagne, so put this on your calendars now as a fun and festive way to kick off the end-of-the-summer holiday weekend!

Movie, Dessert, and Interfaith Discussion: On 30 July 2017 at 6:30 p.m. The Interfaith Circle will be hosting a showing of the movie "The Saint and the Sultan."(59 minutes) We will meet in the Camillus Room of St. Camillus Church, 1500 St. Camillus Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20903, (just off New Hampshire Avenue inside the beltway). The movie is based on the visit of St. Francis of Assisi to the Sultan of Egypt. For further information, please contract Charlie Briggs ([email protected]).

Lenord Hawkins is on vacation until Monday, July 24th. Please welcome Lourdes Garcia who is looking after the building while he is away.

The Readings
for the Week of July 9

Isaiah 55:10-13

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Psalm 65: 9-13Te decet hymnus

9 You visit the earth and water it, you greatly enrich it; *
the river of God is full of water;
you provide the people with grain,
for so you have prepared it.

10 You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges,*
softening it with showers and blessing its growth.

11 You crown the year with your bounty; *
your wagon tracks overflow with richness.

12 The pastures of the wilderness overflow,*
the hills gird themselves with joy,

13 the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,*
the valleys deck themselves with grain,
they shout and sing together for joy.

Revelation 22:1-5

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away.Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!"

"Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."
