A note from our CEO, John Fowler

Ah, summer time! From our 'home' to yours, we hope this is a time to relax and reflect on the abundance of good things we are privileged to enjoy here, along the Central Coast, and across our nation.

At PSHH, the summer months are just as busy as the rest of the year. We celebrated Home Ownership month in June, and welcomed Joyce Allen, Deputy Administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Single Family Housing loan and grant programs. Joyce joined us for VIP Volunteer Day at our home ownership construction site in San Miguel.

We also enjoyed a visit from the  "I Have A Dream" Foundation . Shawn Sadjatumwadee, Manager for Affiliate Expansion, was able to see many of our summer programs, meeting with residents, school district officials and with our employees. We are very excited to draw this national attention to the programs and services near and dear to our heart. This type of attention demonstrates we are doing the right thing and encourages us to do even more for the hard working families you support and we serve everyday!
USDA Deputy Administrator Celebrates National Homeownership Month at PSHH VIP Volunteer Day
Joyce Allen speaks at volunteer event
Joyce Allen, Deputy Administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Single Family Housing loan & grant programs joined us at the VIP Volunteer Day in San Miguel to celebrate National Home Ownership Month!

Joyce was joined by Ron Tackett, California's Housing Program Manager, elected officials, as well as many PSHH staff and board members. Twenty-Four  low-income families are currently building in San Miguel, performing more than 65 percent of the work needed to construct their homes. This 'sweat-equity' serves as their down payment and reduces the final cost. Their diligent, hard work is done mostly on the weekends and spans a 14-month building period.

Helping host the visit for Shawn Sadjatumwadee (IHDF Manager of Affiliate Expansion) at Dahlia Court Apartments in Carpinteria, was Jesse Resnick, PSHH Educator seen here with John Fowler, PSHH President/CEO.

Clearly enjoying all the summer program activities he was able to share, Shawn expressed his own 'dream' of bringing his own family back in a few weeks time to enjoy our wonderful region.
Creating Opportunity, Changing Lives

When Peoples' Self-Help Housing remodeled the landmark El Patio Hotel in Ventura, we were able to create a beautiful environment where formerly homeless people could regain their dignity and independence.

Before moving in, "Ellen" had called the riverbed home. But with an undiagnosed mental illness and a relationship with an abusive partner, this intolerable situation had brought her to the brink of suicide.

Now  with a room of her own, and because of your support, she has access to social services, friends to share concerns and her own special space to heal and grow.

Thank you for helping change her life; please help us change the lives of others.
Remembering Joe Echavarria
Joe Echavarria
Our entire team is saddened by the death of one of our team members, long-time employee Joe Echavarria. Joe passed away on June 18th, 2017 while enjoying the outdoors, in the hills northeast of San Luis Obispo. One of Joe's favorite past times was riding motorcycles and the sense of freedom it gave him. While devastated by his death, we are comforted that Joe spent his last day doing something he loved with people he loved dearly.

Joe began his career with Peoples Self -Help Housing as a Construction Site Superintendent in the home ownership department before transferring to our property management affiliate, The Duncan Group, as Maintenance Manager. His high skill level, calm demeanor, sense of humor and deeply caring attitude allowed him to excel in both positions. He was a truly kind and wonderful person who touched everyone who knew him in a special way that was uniquely him. Joe was one of those wonderful people who grace our lives and make us better in the process. He will be deeply and sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Joe.
PSHH Education Department partners with
EconAlliance  for STEM Industry Day Camp
During the week of June 12, 2017, PSHH collaborated with EconAlliance and other industry partners to bring students from two PSHH neighborhoods to a Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Industry Day Camp.

Forty YEEP and College Club students experienced many different topics covering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

To round out a week of 'experiments and experiences', our students visited Atlas Copco, Zodiac Aerospace, and Hardy Diagnostics, to get some hands-on 'behind the scenes' insight into the exciting and varied career paths which could be available to them through STEM study.

Many thanks to Dr. Joe Sabol, a retired Cal Poly Agriculture professor and PSHH homeownership program supporter, who delivered apple trees on the 4th of July to our new homeowners/builders in Atascadero. What a wonderful and patriotic thing to do!
