In the beginning... Stories from the Book of Genesis Summer Sermon Series

This summer in worship we will be hearing stories from the book of Genesis. From creation to the extraordinary lives of the forefathers and foremothers of our faith tradition, these stories not only reveal to us who God is, but who we are as God's children, called to faithfully serve God and one another even as we care for the world around us. 

We invite all children to participate in a Time for Young Disciples. 

This Sunday children will remain in worship and are invited to a space created just for them in the front of the Sanctuary. While children of all ages are welcome in worship, a nursery for infants through children pre-kindergarten age is available, opening at 9:30 am. You may ask the ushers for directions.

We welcome  members of the Beckwith Handbell choir to our service t his Sunday, presenting an arrangement of the hymn 

Amazing Grace,  the text of which was written by John Newton but the common musical tune is unattributed to any source. We also welcome Christopher and Samuel Moyer, who will present selections for cello and guitar for the prelude. Their parents Kaori and Jonathan join their hands and feet together during the postlude in a Fugue for two organists by nineteenth century German composer Adolf Hesse.

We pray for Akeya Clark (Marie Jones' niece), Rich Day (friend of Bill Braun & Cathy Luck), Eliseo Hairston (Shirley Thompson's family member deployed with the Marines to the Pacific), Shirley Homer (Mildred Russin's cousin), Cyndi Kuntz, Les Knowlton, Marilyn Krotseng, the Lawhon Family, Erika & Norbert Roehl (friends of Arnie & Susan Dahm), Nathan Roth (friend of Matthew Garrett & Michael Peters), Renee Smith (partner of Tony Harvey), Greg Sorrell, Emilee Stewart, Chrismaly Vaidl (traveling to South Korea), Lois Wilson (sister of June Begany) and for those who are struggling with illness, convalescing, or are homebound; the patients, family, and staff in our surrounding hospitals; and those who have placed prayer requests in our Carpenter's Box.

 

Our prayers are with the family of Dr. Clifford D. Shields who died on July 6 in Colorado. At Cliff's request, interment in the Covenant Columbarium will be a private family gathering.  

Our prayers are also with the family of Robert C. Smith, husband of the late Maryel Vogel Smith, who died on June 12 at the age of 94. His memorial service is Monday, July 17, at 11:00 am in Christ Chapel.   For those who wish, contributions in his name may be made to Friends of the National WWII Memorial, 921 Pennsylvania Ave., SE, Suite 316, Washington, DC 20003 or to the Church of the Covenant.

Friday   | 12:15 pm | Tower tours follow

Sunday | 11:00 am | Tower open to visitors during concert

Through July and August George Leggiero and guests will play a concert on Friday at 12:15 pm and repeat that concert at 11:00 am on Sunday morning. During the Sunday concerts, the tower will be open to visitors. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Printed programs are available on the lawn as you leave the service. Explore the area around the tower and find your "special spot" to hear the bells and let us know where that is. Thank you to everyone who supported the Youth  Car Wash last Sunday, and to all the volunteers who supported our youth in this fundraiser. Your generosity raised $600 for our Youth Mission Experiences.
