Homecoming and Family Weekend is just around the corner (October 6-8), and we hope to see you there! A full schedule of all the activities during the weekend has been mailed to all alumni. We encourage you to visit the alumni events website for any updates or changes to the schedule between now and Homecoming Weekend. This year, we will celebrate milestone reunions for class years ending in "2" and "7" with a huge reunion celebration in the Rotunda on Saturday evening. All alumni are encouraged to attend to help celebrate. Invitations for the class years celebrating milestone reunions will be mailed out soon. Be sure RSVP early to reserve your spot at the party! Remi Adeleki, former Navy SEAL and UC graduate, brought a team of SEALs and Special Forces Operators to Charleston this past weekend. Their goal was to promote leadership training and skills to various groups, including UC athletes, high school athletes, west side children and managers at the Toyota plant in Buffalo.
Adeleki received both his Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership and a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership from UC. He specializes in topics encompassing leadership, mental toughness, critical thinking, perseverance, choices and team building. Drawing from his experiences in Special Operations and in the streets of New York City, Adeleki inspires people to achieve greatness by stressing the importance of outstanding leadership, perseverance, and character at every level. He can also be seen in the movie Transformers: The Last Knight.
It was an honor to have several U.S. Navy SEALs on campus. The SEALs spent time with our athletic teams as well as other various groups in the UC community. This video is a glimpse at what was a very special morning spent with some of the members of the men's football team.

Over 100 students, faculty, staff and community members gathered on the UC riverbank for a solar eclipse viewing party on Monday afternoon. The event was complete with special eclipse viewing glasses, music, popcorn and pinhole projectors made by some of the UC science faculty.

The UC Organizational Leadership program ranked 7th on www.collegechoice.net
as one of the "35 Best Online Organizational Leadership Degrees." The ranking is based on academic excellence and return on investment. The website also weighs factors such as program tuition, early career earnings and school acceptance rates. Schools evaluated had to be regionally accredited as well. UC was cited for its "innovative, performance-based curriculum focused on specific outcomes." The OL program "equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in today's fast-changing business world." The online

program is a completion program, intended for working adults who have already completed 40 credits of undergraduate coursework.

The Future of Nursing WV honored "40 under 40" nurses from across WV at a gala earlier this month. The UC Nursing Department had two honorees, Skylar Marsh, Assistant Professor in the ADN program and Mackenzie Lanham, Instructor in the BSN program!

Professors Lailah Rice and Brittany Clark, and nine clinical-year physician assistant students took part in a week-long medical mission trip to Haiti. The trip was organized through the UC PA Student Association on a volunteer basis, and coordinated through Hope Outreach International, a humanitarian and development organization focused on making Haiti a better place for its people.
The connection between UC and HOI began in 2014, when Lailah Rice told her students about her participation in a medical mission. Last year, 16 students accompanied Rice and served alongside HOI for one week, providing medical care to over 400 people.
There were 21 students in the current class interested in participating, but that group was too large to be accommodated, so it will be split into two groups. The next group of 12 students, Lailah Rice and Program Director Jennifer Pack, will take a similar trip in January.
The UC students served a population that only has medical care when such groups arrive. They worked from sun up to sun down, seeing as many patients as possible in the small two-room clinic with no electricity or running water. Prior to the trip, the PA students raised money, collected medications and supplies to take with them on the trip.

UC will be launching a new "Science Saturdays" series of events, a unique series of workshops for high school junior and senior girls. The program is focused on educating and empowering WV girls to choose careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
The theme of the first outreach program, starting September 16, will be "Medicine from Dirt." The events start on September 16 and run on consecutive Saturdays through October 28 and take place on the main UC campus.
In the first workshop, students will search WV soils for antibiotic producing microorganisms and learn techniques used in the discovery of biologically active molecules.
The program will be led by soil microbiologist Dr. Aida Jimenez, the only Small World Initiative Partner Instructor in the state currently, along with Master Naturalist and Biochemist Dr. Rebecca Linger. Students will be provided one-on-one mentoring, hands-on experience in many advanced, college level lab techniques such as culturing and characterizing microbes from the environment, isolating bioactive chemicals from bacteria, and becoming familiar with the techniques used by professionals in the search of novel medicines.
Participants will also have the opportunity to use the University's Innovation Center Maker Lab facilities and 3D printers and go on a nature hike.

Jerome Sparks, '92, has written a horror novel entitled, Love, Death and Other Lies. Jerome, a native of West Virginia, majored in creative productions while attending UC. Hoping to become a college professor, Sparks went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Humanities, with a concentration in literary theory, but then decided law school was for him. He pursued a J.D. from Tulane Law School in New Orleans and is currently practicing law in West Virginia.

Ian Weaver '16, was recently featured in a story on the WVU website. He was one of four students selected to paint a mural in one of the health science buildings on campus. Ian graduated from UC with a degree in biology and art and entered WVU's dental school. Read

Maggie Reed, '96, recently accepted a position as an account representative with Quadsimia, an internet presence technology company. Maggie's previous experience includes more than 15 years of marketing management. She also has experience in brand development and management, budget development and management, internet marketing, analytics, and more. Maggie obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration at UC.

Jamie Billings, '95, has been named as Central Cabarrus High School's (Concord, NC) new athletics director. Jamie played baseball at UC and earned a degree in sports medicine. After college, he spent time as an assistant coach and teacher at DuPont High School before moving to North Carolina.

For the first time in school history, both of our soccer teams are ranked in the top 25 of the national pre-season poll (Men are ranked #2 and Women are ranked #24). We're pretty proud to see that both of our teams are recognized as some of the best in NCAA

begins the season at No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and were picked to win the Mountain East Conference for the first time ever!

The Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) announced the 2016-17 recipients of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Awards. The Academic Achievement Awards is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level.
Nominees must have a 3.5 GPA and completed at minimum of 60 credit hours.
UC had 78 student athletes that received an academic achievement award!
