Doug Burke
ACE Tennis President

As we wind down with our hectic summer camps in both Burlington and Toronto - a lot of our players/families are looking forward to a week or two where they can exhale and enjoy some time with their families before the School & Academy year begins September 5th in Toronto and 5th and 11th in Burlington.
The last few weeks have been an exciting time for many of our young ACE Tennis enthusiasts, as they attended and participated in various activities at the Rogers Cup (see pictures below).
There is no "break" for some of our competitive players - as after competing in Provincials in July - they have qualified for the various age group Nationals that are underway in Quebec and Toronto.
We are also very proud of our three girls (see below) that were selected to represent Canada on tours in Europe.

One of the climaxes to the summer is the upcoming City of Toronto Championships starting today, along with the Harold Green Open also at Toronto Tennis City next week. These events will be followed closely by  the U10 Provincial Championships which we will host at the Burlington Tennis Club from September 1 - 4th.

Enjoy the remainder of the summer everyone - and make sure you register for our programs quickly (especially our New International Morning Program) to ensure your spot.

RAHEEL MANJI AT THE ROGERS CUP IN MONTREAL

"Playing in the Coupe Rogers for the first time was an incredible experience. Competing and being around the best in the world, really opens your eyes. I fell to the number 72 player in the world, Norbert Gombos, 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-1. It was a tough 3 setter, that I felt I could have won with some more experience. However, it was such a learning experience, that I plan to grow from. Away from competing, I was the Bryan Brothers, Gael Monfils and Robin Haase's practice partner. They were great guys, who taught and helped me a lot. The Bryan Brothers, especially gave me a lot of advice and support. Finally, I got to meet the greatest hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky. Wayne was so down to earth, extremely easy to talk to and offered such great and simple advice. He is a big supporter of Canadian tennis. It was a priceless experience and I cannot wait to continue to surround myself with this level.  -Raheel Manji

Despite the summer program only being 8 weeks long, I have seen great improvement in the players who were a part of it all summer. The reason is because they were training twice per day and playing the recommended number of hours according to Tennis Canada. For any of the parents out there who have young athletes and are new to the tennis world, a guideline for knowing how much to train is your child's age. If your child is 12 years old, they should train about 12 hours on court.

Another major reason for the vast improvement in the players is the variety of different training they receive during the summer. They do group training, private lessons, drills on the ball machine, hitting partner sessions, and play matches. This variety allows players to work on all the skills needed to become a great player but most importantly, it changes things up often enough that the training doesn't get too redundant causing them to get bored.
Now that the summer is over, the question is how can we continue this momentum? It certainly becomes more difficult with all the players going back to school and fitting it all into our busy schedules. My recommendation is to get as much of a balance as you can from September to June with the different types of training mentioned above. Start with being in a group training program (because this is the most cost effective way to get a lot of training hours) and then add on with the private lessons, hitting sessions, etc.

At ACE, we offer many different levels of group training, and then there's many other complimentary training programs that you can add on in order to get your children playing the right amount. These options include our new international morning program (semi private training), Saturday morning competitive training, Friday match play program, and private lessons.

If you're ever confused or unsure of what your child needs, consult the coach in charge of their program and I'm sure they'll be able to help.

ACE's International Team Program targets players wishing to reach their full potential by providing an option which meets the training requirements and integrated team approach of High Performance players. Players will participate in a semi-private training program designed to complement the afternoon group training content and address individual needs. Head coaches will assign an assistant coach to implement the structured Team Program, and will monitor the program with the player's private coach.  Players will also receive tennis specific on court movement training, individual fitness, annual plans, coaching at selected tournaments, access to a mental training program and free use of ACE Replay. Extra individual training will be available. Minimum participation for the U18 and U12 group is 3 x per week (2 x tennis with 2-3 players and 1 x fitness with 2-4 players). Minimum participation for U9 players is 2 times per week. Programs can be customized to add additional training based on player needs.
