Free Webinar on College Mental Health with NAMI & NCAA

College is an exciting time of intellectual growth, new friendships and independence. But the transition from high school to college can be a time of stress, which often impacts mental health. In fact, 75% of all mental health conditions begin by age 24. That is why the college years are critical for understanding and talking about mental health. Join NAMI and the NCAA for a doubleheader free webinar as we raise awareness about the signs of mental health conditions in college students and where to seek help when they arise.

This SAMHSA-sponsored webinar will highlight important information in NAMI's college guide, Starting the Conversation: College and Your Mental Health, including students' health privacy rights. It will also showcase the NCAA's best practices for safeguarding the mental health and wellbeing of student-athletes through the Sport Science Institute.

Date : July 18, 2017
Time : 3:00-4:30 p.m. (EST)

Speakers
Darcy Gruttadaro, J.D., Director of Public Policy, NAMI
Happy Carlock, Advocacy & Public Policy Coordinator, NAMI

Your Voice Matters, Share Your Story!
Your voice matters and sharing your story will help protect access to mental health care for all Americans.  NAMI has been collecting stories and we encourage every member to share more. This is a way we can collect stories to share with our policy makers and help them be more aware of the impacts their decisions have on our mental health.

NAMI set up a Survey Monkey link  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MHCoverageStory
where Members can share their stories here, which we can share on social media, in alerts, and so on. The survey also asks for permission to share, whether they want to remain anonymous, etc. This short survey seeks information from members regarding how mental health coverage has helped you and what would happen if you didn't have coverage.

NAMI National to Pilot New Program in CA

NAMI National will be piloting a new program in California, among other states, over the next few months. The new program - NAMI Family & Friends - is a 4-hour seminar that informs and supports people who have loved ones living with a mental health condition. Participants learn about diagnoses, treatment, recovery, communication strategies, crisis preparation, and NAMI resources. The new seminar is being supported through Providence St. Joseph Health.

In addition to piloting the NAMI Family & Friends seminar, NAMI will be testing:
  • an eBook version of the participant manual; and
  • an online program search/participant management tool called the NAMI Portal.
Please stay tuned for more information that NAMI California will send out to affiliates via email in the next following days. The information will contain more details about the new seminar, as well as information on how interested affiliates can submit an interest form to participate in the program.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Erik Villalobos, Education Coordinator, at [email protected]
