AOTS Demonstrates Benefits of Court Ordered Treatment
The
Assisted Outpatient Treatment Services (AOTS) program at CarePlus is effectively demonstrating the benefits of court ordered behavioral healthcare on recidivism in hospitalizations, incarcerations/arrests, and homelessness.
Under the guidance of James Nono, LCSW, the AOTS team at CarePlus delivers community-based mental health services to individuals age 18 years or older with severe and persistent mental illness, who have demonstrated difficulty adhering to treatment. The program focuses on access to treatment and support services, as well as intensive intervention treatment and case management, in an effort to sustain the individual within the community.
Of the 52 total clients served by AOTS during FY'17, 14 were homeless within 1 year prior to AOTS, 9 of which were enrolled without a permanent address upon intake. Directly because of AOTS involvement, 7 clients were able to secure temporary placement at the Bergen County shelter, of which all 7 of these clients have already secured permanent housing in the community. Of the 43 consumers enrolled that were not homeless, 0% experienced homelessness while enrolled.
Additionally, in tracking data from the 52 individuals served by AOTS during FY'17, it was found that when comparing one year prior and one year post AOTS enrollment, individuals were:
- 69% less likely to re-hospitalize
- 100% less likely to be arrested or incarcerated
It is also significant to note that the services by AOTS at CarePlus resulted in the 52 individuals collectively spending 1,031 less days in an inpatient hospital with AOTS involvement, which translates to the state/local government saving approximately $4,800,336.

Community Support
Students Giving Back
Visitation received a very thoughtful donation from the East Brook Middle School in Paramus. We partner with them every year during the holiday season, during which their students help to collect donated presents to our kids, and we have a big wrapping party.
They contacted us this month to let us know that they had a stuffed animal drive and donated the collection they received to our kids as well.
"[The students] are excited to share all the animals they were able to collect for the families at CarePlus. We hope they can bring some happiness to the children."

The employee in crisis this morning was able to see Barbara Yearing, and said she was incredible! Many thanks to Barbara for returning our call for help. The employee later told me that she has a provider who she is already seeing, but Barbara really helped her to make sense of what she was suffering from today. After speaking with Barbara, the employee is in a MUCH better place than she was a few hours ago.
Thanks to all!

Way to Go, Jennifer!
A Letter of Appreciation
I am writing this letter to let you know how much I appreciate the consistent excellent work from your employee Ms. Jennifer Leighton. Ms. Leighton has an exceptional talent in dealing with one of our most challenging families. Despite the challenges, Ms. Leighton always has a cheerful disposition. She also has an uncanny ability to be firm and direct with the family without pushing them away or having them shut down, which in this case was desperately needed. I truly believe that she has helped our family come to the realization that they need to make a change. As a team we were able to see this first hand at our mid case conference yesterday. The family appeared to be receptive to what she was saying and did not revert back to being angry, shutting down or leaving the meeting. I believe that they have become more open due to her ability of being empathic, understanding and making her availability to the family and the team.
In our field we hear of the mistakes or challenges but I wanted to recognize your workers hard work. In the future Ms. Leighton will come to mind if the need arises for the Families First program. Thank you for your time.

State Funding Transition: Advocacy Action Steps
1. Write Letters & Make Phone Calls You can use the following link to find your legislators. Simply enter your hometown and you will get all of the information you need: www.njleg.state.nj.us/SelectMun.asp
Please note: some letters will be more detailed than others, but short and simple contributions are important as well.
2. Story Telling Campaign Part of our advocacy campaign is to collect written or video testimonials by clients, family, and staff. With enough engagement, the campaign is expected to grow into a larger, more powerful storytelling campaign that will launch through an Instagram account.
We need your help: if you are a staff member that would be willing to participate, or if you have a client that has a story to tell, please contact
Caitlyn
. We will be able to work with people who would like to remain anonymous, and think that this will be a very engaging way to increase our culture of community and compassion.
3. Get Educated & Stay Up To Date
CarePlus along with eight other non-profit community mental health organizations have joined together to form the New Jersey Community Mental Health Coalition (
NJCMHC
). Together we are advocating for continued, comprehensive treatment and care for mentally ill adults and children throughout New Jersey. Our mission is to give a voice to each person suffering from mental illness and ensure that they have continued, uninterrupted access to the proper treatment and long-term, ongoing care that they desperately need.

Program Marketing
It is important for staff to familiarize themselves with the variety of program and services offered through CarePlus so that we can make appropriate referrals for those in need. For that reason, we are working on streamlining information and materials so that they are more easily accessible.
This involves appropriately updated Program Fact Sheets, comprehensive marketing folders, social media spotlights, and up to date information on the CarePlus website.
A new folder has been added to the S Drive so that staff can quickly access Program Information Sheets. These Fact Sheets can be found in the first folder in All Staff titled _FactSheets.
If you need any materials created, revised, or printed for your program or presentations you will need to utilize the electronic request form. This new system is being used to ensure timely and effective completion of projects. You may have noticed recent Facebook posts highlighting some of our services. This is the part of our effort to market each of our programs to the community. If you would like to put your team, group or program in the spotlight, contact the ACE team to make arrangements. You can also send positive reviews and feedback for coworkers who go above and beyond. If you have anything you would like to submit for the InsideLine, email your story and information to Caitlyn Yerves.
