Back to School Backpack Giveaway - 
It's that time of year again when the kids will soon be going back to school  In order to help you prepare, Harvest Bible Church is giving away free backpacks full of school supplies on Saturday, August 26 beginning at 10:00 a.m.  The event will run while supplies last and there will also be free hot dogs and fun games.  Harvest Bible Church is location at 6420 Newburgh Rd.  For more information, visit  www.harvestdetroit.org  or call (734)895-3280. 


Cruisin' Hines - For all of you Cruisers out there, this is the weekend you have been waiting for.  The 6th Annual Cruisin' Hines will take place on Sunday, August 27.  This event gets bigger every year, and they are expecting over sixty thousand cars to be on Hines Drive beginning at 9:00 a.m.  This is an event for classics only, all cars entering must be at least 25 years old.  If you want to check out the cars, spectators can park at the Merriman Road entrance.  For all of the details, check out www.CruisinHines.com

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:

Community Development Citizens Advisory Committee
  • The CDCAC will meet on Tuesday, August 29 at 5:00 p.m. at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey St.

Downtown Development Authority
  • The DDA will meet on Thursday, August 31 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

All American Farmers and Artisans Marketplace - The Marketplace is the ultimate site for farmers, growers and producers to sell their own products directly to the public and a great place to find the finest locally grown produce, flowers and handmade goods.  The Farmers Market will take place every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Central City Park, located at 1901 N. Carlson.  


Saturday in the Park -  Wayne County Parks' Saturday in the Park program has returned. Each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., visitors can walk, run, skate or cycle safely along six miles of Hines Drive. Hines Drive will be shut down o vehicular traffic from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive so that guests have the opportunity to participate in their favorite activities in a vehicle-free environment. The Saturday in the Park program will take continue every Saturday through September 30. All ages are encouraged to participate.  Parking is available at the Hines Park-Helms Haven Area (Hines Drive, west of Outer Drive) and Hines Park-Nankin Mills Picnic Area (Hines Drive, east of Ann Arbor Trail).  For more information about Saturday in the Park or any other Wayne County Parks program, please call (734) 261-1990.


H20 Zone Season Ends; Free September Saturdays Offered - This week is the final week of the regular season for he H20 Zone.  The cost is $3 for Westland residents.  Season passes are available for purchase for up to 6 family members for a resident is $40.00 and for a non-resident $100.00.  Group Rates up to 10 people for residents is $25.00 and $80.00 for non-residents.   Monday, September 4 will be the last day the H20 Zone is open its normal hours.  Beginning Saturday, September 9, the H20 Zone will be open on Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (weather permitting) and there will be no cost to enter.

City Offices Closed in Observance of Labor Day - On Monday, September 4 all city offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day.  This includes the 18th District Court and the William P. Faust Westland Public Library.  Trash and recycling pick up will also not be picked up on Monday, September 4 and will be delayed by one day due to the holiday for the remainder of the week.
