Welcome to the 2017-18 Academic Year!

On behalf of the entire Mortenson Center team, welcome (or welcome back)!  Our team has grown since last semester, and we look forward to getting to know both our new students and our new faculty member, Dr. Carlo Salvinelli.  In mid-September we will also be welcoming a new Program Assistant, Sarah Goodroad, who will be managing many of the programs' administrative duties including assisting the EDC Student Group plan and schedule their activities. In the meantime, remember that Robyn Sandekian, our Managing Director, is here to answer any and all questions you may have about the Graduate Certificate in EDC.  You can e- mail Robyn at  [email protected], call her at 303-735-6708, or drop by ECOT 532 .  Robyn will be presenting a brief introduction to the program at the end the first session of CVEN 5919 Sustainable Community Development 1 on Tuesday, August 29.

All new and continuing EDC students, plus the program faculty and staff are encouraged to attend a start-of-the-semester welcome dinner.   This dinner will be held on campus in the Center for Community!   Please RSVP here (yes or no) by Thursday, August 31 at 5:00pm and include any food allergies in the comments section.  Please note, this event is for EDC students only. No guests.
Humanitarian Response and Disaster Management Course

Spaces are still available in Dr. Carlo Salvinelli 's course on Humanitarian Response and Disaster Management this fall. The course is scheduled on Tues/Thurs at 12:30 to 1:45 pm has on campus and distance education sections (where students "attend" class from off-campus), and is available at graduate (CVEN 5837) and undergraduate (CVEN 4837) levels.  The course will give an overview of the main principles, standards, and key stakeholders involved in humanitarian response and will analyze the different phases of disaster and crisis management. EDC Program Students Eligible for Devex Career Accounts

Current students enrolled in the graduate certificate in Engineering for Developing Communities are eligible for free career accounts on Devex, "The media platform for the global development community" according to their website, Devex.com.  If you are interested in activating your membership, funded by the Mortenson Center, please email Robyn Sandekian at [email protected] and she will send you the customized link.  This site provides access to development jobs and news that will help you get the most out of your graduate education as a potential future development engineer.
Congrats to MCEDC External Advisory Board Member Eleanor Allen

Eleanor Allen, Water For People CEO and Mortenson Center External Advisory Board member, was recently named a Water Environment Federation Fellow. The Fellow designation recognizes achievements, stature, and contributions to water quality. For more details, see the  press release on our  webpage. Congratulations Eleanor!

WASH and Behavior Change

8 week course begins September 7, 2017 

This course introduces the practices of incorporating behaviour strategies into WASH program design and delivery. It helps the participants to understand when behaviour change strategies should be integrated into WASH programs, and enables the use of practical tools to guide the integration of behaviour change into WASH programs. It has been called the largest humanitarian crisis the world has seen in decades. Humanitarian assistance and international development have different objectives and time horizons, but must work together to respond to the crisis at hand while also preventing the next one from occurring. What role does international development play in building long-term resilience? What are the linkages between conflict, fragility, and severe food insecurity? How can U.S. leadership and international development programming break the cycle of instability and famine? Listen in as U.S. policy makers, technical experts, and thought leaders discuss how these crises have unfolded and what needs to be considered in the response.
MSF "Footsteps of a Fieldworker" Tour

You are invited to join Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for the "Footsteps of a Fieldworker" tour in Boulder, CO. The tour is designed for medical and non-medical professionals interested in working with MSF in the field. Come learn how MSF staff work to provide aid to refugees around the world. Find out who they need, and register for this tour.
   

Presented by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Forced From Home is a free, interactive, outdoor exhibition and guided tour designed to enhance visitors' understanding of the desperate plight of the more than 65 million displaced people worldwide. With an experienced MSF aid worker as their guide, visitors navigate an outdoor installation designed to convey some of the challenges faced by individuals forced to flee from Afghanistan, Burundi, Honduras, South Sudan, and Syria.

SPHERE Handbook Revision Workshop

September 12, 2017 4:00pm to 6:00pm

The Sphere Handbook is one of the most widely known and internationally recognized sets of common principles and universal minimum standards in humanitarian response. This workshop, hosted by MCEDC, will provide a forum for humanitarian practitioners and academics to provide input for the 2018 revised Sphere Handbook and standards. You can also join via web conferencing. Registration is open.

Solar Decathlon 2017 in Denver

October 5-15, 2017

The Solar Decathlon is coming back to Denver and is seeking volunteers to help. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition of 10 contests that challenge student teams to design and build full-size, solar-powered houses. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends design excellence and smart energy production with innovation, market potential, and energy and water efficiency. Union of Concerned Scientists Accepting Proposals


The Union of Concerned Scientists Science Network is excited to announce a new grant program for science advocates: The Science for Public Good Fund. Science Network members can apply to the Fund for financial support of up to $1000, to be used for advocacy actions or related events to defend the role of science in public policy, with an emphasis on understanding and addressing local impacts. Applicants must be active UCS Science Network members (or must be willing to become members) at time of application. Read more on the UCS Science Network website.
NSF Grad Research Fellowship Applications for 2018 Now Open

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, veterans, and undergraduate seniors to apply. Check here for full program details.
