Sydney Townsend Recognized for Earning Gold Award

Pictured: Sydney Townsend, Mayor Carl Suraci and Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley
Sydney Townsend, a 2017 graduate of Hillsborough High School and a member of Girl Scout Troop 61052, was recently honored by the Mayor and Township Committee for earning her Gold Award.

Sydney devoted many hours, working with diligence, to her Gold Award project, "Increase Awareness of Sensory Disabilities".  Sydney helped raise awareness about discrimination and ignorance of sensory disabilities by holding workshops at the Hillsborough Public Library, providing a brief presentation on history, culture, and common misconceptions of sensory disabilities.  The workshops also included a few activities to allow participants to learn about ASL and Braille.  Sydney created a Facebook page to promote awareness about her project and a corresponding YouTube channel that showcases the exact presentations as well as clips of the activities.  Sydney hopes to increase awareness about individuals with certain specialties as her audience grows.

The Mayor and the Hillsborough Township Committee recognize and extend their sincere congratulations to Sydney Townsend for having earned her Girl Scout Gold Award.  Sydney serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through her achievements, leadership, and community service, and we are very proud that Sydney is a member of our community.
9th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

Saturday, November 11, 2017 @ 8:30 am; Municipal Complex's Garden of Honor

Hillsborough Township will be hosting its 9th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on  Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 8:30am at the Garden of Honor, located at the  Hillsborough Township Municipal Complex. In case of inclement weather, the  ceremony will be held in the Multipurpose Room.

This year, Veterans Day falls on a Saturday instead of a weekday. Due to this, our  annual celebration will take place Saturday morning to be more accommodating for  guests. The program will include a ceremony at the Garden of Honor followed by a brief reception for participating Veterans and their spouses in the Multipurpose room where coffee and pastries will be served.

Members of the public are invited to observe the Garden of Honor ceremony. All those who attend are asked to bring a canned good item to be donated to the Hillsborough Community Assistance Network. For a list of items that are most needed, please visit www.hillsborough-nj.org.
Tenth Anniversary Marks the Most Successful Rotary Fair Ever

Pictured with Mr. Wayne are (left to right) Rotarians Josh Riding, Patricia Marciano and President Anthony Franchini.
The annual, week-long Hillsborough Rotary Fair may have just wound down, but for long-term Hillsborough resident Bruce Wayne (center pic 1), the fun was just beginning on Sunday as he collected his $2,700 in winnings from the Rotary Club of Hillsborough's Giant 50/50 Raffle.

The annual Rotary Fair, now in its tenth year under Rotary's leadership, is the primary fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.  This year brought in record setting revenues to the Hillsborough Rotary Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.  All the funds raised are returned to the community through contributions to a wide array of community service organizations and causes.

"We are very grateful for the overwhelming participation of the Hillsborough community," commented President Franchini.  "For many families, the Fair has become an annual tradition, and for our Club, it is a project near and dear to our hearts."  Now permanently located on the grounds adjacent to the Hillsborough Promenade near the Lowe's parking lot on Route 206 in Hillsborough, the Fair welcomed an estimated 15,000 people this year, who enjoyed its 21 amusement rides, games, food, fireworks and music throughout the week.

Rotary  brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.

The  Rotary Club of Hillsborough  currently has over 40 active members from Hillsborough and surrounding communities.   Members include business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.  All funds raised by The Rotary Club of Hillsborough are used to support a wide variety of community service organizations and projects. The Rotary Club of Hillsborough meets every Wednesday at 6:15 pm, at The Landing Restaurant in Hillsborough.  Those interested in exploring membership in Rotary can contact Rich Salem at 908-448-6630.

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough extends thanks to all that made this event so successful.  Please visit the Rotary Club of Hillsborough's Facebook Page to read more about the many individuals and groups that contributed to this year's fair.

September 11 Memorial Golf Outing

The annual 9/11 Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Bedminster Township.

The event benefits the Adam P. Arias Memorial Scholarship Fund which grew out of the organizers' desire to honor and aid first responders and their families and those who gave their lives on September 11, 2001 and thereafter in service to their country. It is held in memory of Adam Arias, a victim of the attack on the Towers and brother of one of the organizers.

Proceeds for the outing are donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, a scholarship at Hillsborough High School to the child of a first responder, a scholarship to children of military personnel, and Hillsborough PBA Local 205 for the benefit of Travis Oldenburg, son of Hillsborough Police Detective Trevor Oldenburg. Travis is a student at Somerset Hills Learning Center which offers a broad spectrum of services to children, adolescents, and adults with autism.

Registration and lunch will begin at 11:00 am with scramble play beginning at 1:00 pm and cocktails and dinner at 5:30 pm. The $225 fee includes lunch, dinner and open bar from 5:00 - 8:00.
