Coronavirus Update
I understand that many of you may have questions and concerns with the announcement last night from Superintendent Winston that all local and out-of-state field trips are canceled. I want to begin by thanking our families for all for your patience and support as decisions are ever-changing due to the impact of the Coronavirus. Please know that the safety of our students, staff, and families is our top priority. In addition, we must also consider the financial implications for our families and act responsibly to ensure that at least a good portion of the funds paid for field trips can be refunded. Therefore, all of our upcoming field trips in March and April are being canceled at Bailey, which includes the 8th Grade trip to Williamsburg, 7th Grade to Carowinds, 6th Grade to Camp Thunderbird, and Performing Band to Nashville, TN. The Orchestra trip to Universal Studios in May is still to be determined since we have time before funds paid become non-refundable. Lastly, CMS is allowing Orchestras to attend their MPA in Winston Salem on Thursday.
We understand that this decision creates a lot of questions regarding refunds for all of these canceled trips. Please know that we have already begun working with our field trip vendors to get answers to you as quickly as possible. This includes any monies paid this week that were already deposited. Also remember this will not be a quick process as we have already sent out security deposits and will have to work with the vendors' policies regarding reimbursements. The process of retrieving some or all of these funds could take several weeks and there is a good possibility we will not get the full amount returned. Finally, there are CMS guidelines and logistics to follow when reimbursing over 1000 parents for a field trip so this will take some time.
As the situation with the Coronavirus changes, we will continue to update families with the latest information from CMS, Mecklenburg County Health Department, and the CDC. The Coronavirus crisis continues to evolve rapidly so please pay attention to all forms of communication. At the school level, we have enhanced cleaning throughout the building including classrooms, the lunch room, and restrooms. Additionally, the Flu and stomach bugs are running rampant as well so please keep your student home if they are sick, especially if they are running a fever. We encourage you to follow the recommended preventative steps and latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: http://www.cdc.gov
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
- Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
Stay Healthy!

Bailey Band Notes
Congratulations to Gustavo Cruz!!
He was able to audition for the All-State Concert Band AND All-State Jazz Band yesterday! To say the audition process is competitive is an understatement. Over 1,000 players in concert band and jazz band got to audition after scoring at the top of their district auditions for a little over 300 spots in 5 ensembles.
Gustavo is not the first Bailey Band student audition but he is the first to make either band.
He has earned first chair on tenor sax in the 2020 All-State Middle School Concert Band AND second chair on tenor sax in the 2020 All-State Middle School Jazz Band!!!
The Bailey Performing Band attended the 2020 South Central District Music Performance Adjudication at Wingate University on March 6th. There are approximately 50-55 middle school bands in a 10-county area that attend this district event. Some bands perform for comments only and many perform for ratings. Adjudicators provide written and recorded feedback for the bands to note what has been done well and where improvements need to be made.
The band prepared three pieces for their stage performance and received a rating of "Superior" from each of the three judges. Band music is graded from level one to six. The Bailey Performing Band took music in a Grade II/III split. This is the first time the band has taken a piece in Grade III. The band also sight-read a piece which they had never seen before after five minutes of preparation time. For sight-reading, the band received a rating of "Superior" from the sight-reading judge.
