Young executives tour
This past month we were lucky to have ARPIS Industries provide MCA members with a mechanical tour of Brookfield Place Calgary. The views were amazing as were all of the facts about the building. For example, upon completion, approximately 200,000 field and shop hours will be used for the complete plumbing and heating scope of work!
Plus, the materials used on the project consist of 145,000 feet of steel pipe, 35,000 feet of cast iron pipe, 13,400 feet of copper DWV pipe, 57,000 feet of copper and stainless-steel water line and 16,000 valves! Thanks Barry and Paul for your time.
Thank you to all who attended the tour and the networking after! Thank you to Bibby Ste Croix for supplying the door prize!

Product specific training comes to an end this season
On June 19, we had our final product specific training for the season. A huge thank you to Bartle & Gibson for providing a BBQ and hosting our training on wastewater FOG requirements.
We had a great turnout of people to hear City of Calgary plumbing and gas inspectors speak on the City's bylaws and national plumbing codes, as well as Canplas Industries who discussed proper sizing and venting of interceptors.
Technicians could move to different stations for questions and hands-on training. Thank you to Canplas Industries, Val Temp Sales and Cougar Technical Services for providing these stations. We hope to see everyone again in the fall when we roll-out the next series of product specific training courses.

NAIT is now offering a CSA approved medical gas installer certification course
Earlier this year, MCA members received a notice that all future work on medical gas facilities will require having a journeyman who is certified specifically for medical gas installation. At the time of this notice the only facilities accredited to provide this training were the UA local 488, in Edmonton and the UA local 496, in Calgary. Through MCA efforts the deadline for training was delayed and NAIT has subsequently achieved its CSA accreditation to provide medical gas certification.
NAIT has a training session scheduled for August 14 to 18. We anticipate that a similar offering will also be available through SAIT and other providers in the near future.

New requirement - Building height on architectural drawings
To improve efficiency and reduce processing time, the city of Edmonton is implementing a new requirement for architectural drawings.
Effective August 1, 2017, all applications for single detached, semi-detached and row housing permits must include building height measurements in metres on architectural drawings. The building height measurements must include:
- For hip or gable roof:
- The height (m) of the building from finished floor to the midpoint
- The height (m) from the finished floor to top of the roof (ridge)
- For flat roof:
- The height (m) of the building from finished floor to the midpoint of the parapet
- The height (m) from the finished floor to the top of the parapet
This requirement is in effect for all new home construction permit applications (single detached, semi-detached and row housing) submitted online or via hard-copy applications. For questions, contact Melissa Ziober at 780-442-4543 or [email protected].

It was recently brought to my attention that there was some question as to the compatibility of ULC S636 vent piping and spray-applied rigid polyurethane foam.
