August 2017
NAP Logo
August is your last month for club NAP qualifying games! The North American Pairs (NAP) is a grassroots event in three flights that starts at the local level and runs all the way to the national level.

Remember that a club qualification earns you a place at the district games (October), which can earn you a spot at the Nationals in Philadelphia in March. District level qualifications can also earn you money! Check with your local club for qualifying game dates and times. For more info, click on the links for each flight in the District 4 events box below.

President's Message
DBoye head shot

As the Toronto NABC has just ended, District 4 was well represented north of the border. Special recognition and congratulations go out to our District Director Joann Glasson and her team - Bob Glasson, Rick Rowland and Marty Rabinowitz - for bringing home the trophy in the Senior Swiss! The venue was everything a bridge player could want. Large open areas with plenty of room between tables and perfect lighting made the playing areas comfortable. Walking around the City showcased why Toronto is an ideal location for a summer nationals. There were plenty of casual as well as fine dining restaurants within walking distance of the playing site. Toronto offered enjoyable and delicious late night sidewalk dessert dining after the sessions on Friday and Saturday nights. I couldn't help but be excited about District 4's opportunity to show ACBL members all that Philadelphia has to offer when we host the 2018 Spring Nationals in March. NABC Tournament Chair, Joann Glasson, has assembled a star studded team of volunteers to ensure that Philadelphia and District 4 will provide players with everything that made Toronto a success (several hundred tables over the estimate) - from an excellent playing area to hospitality that will be rated second to none and a wide range of savory dining choices that are certain to satisfy players' palates. Many players commented on Toronto's congenial population. Philadelphia is known as the "City of Brotherly Love." Let's work together to live up to and exceed that description. See you all at "the Nook."

Jane Segal

District 4 lost a great player, teacher, ambassador, volunteer, and advocate this week with the passing of Jane Segal. A former District 4 president, goodwill committee member, hospitality coordinator, host, teacher, and much more, Jane contributed to the game in nearly every possible role. She will be missed by her many friends, students, tablemates, and everyone who knew her through the game.

Tributes have poured in from around the country. You can read a sample of them here.

Valley Forge Report

Philadelphia Regional Logo
Great news to report from the Philadelphia Regional at Valley Forge. Attendance was up 6.3% over last year -- a rare exception for regionals across the country, where attendance is almost uniformly dropping or barely holding steady.

Survey results indicate that players were happy with nearly every aspect from the schedule to hospitality to location. Dupli-Swiss continues to be a major draw and a key reason for the regional's ongoing success.

Chairman Meyer Kotkin will continue to look for ways to innovate and improve the many features of the regional and make the player experience even better next year. He and the tournament committee look forward to seeing everyone again!
Results from Toronto

Hearty congratulations to District Director Joann Glasson, GNT/NAP Coordinator Bob Glasson, Rick Rowland, and Marty Rabinowitz for their impressive WIN in the Truscott Senior Swiss at the Toronto Nationals. We are delighted to report on this impressive success in a nationally-rated event for our District 4 players!

We are also happy to report on a terrific 2nd place finish for Sam Amer and his partner Daniel Lev in the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs. Players will remember Sam, who grew up playing in Unit 190, as one our District's talented, young players. Well done, Sam!

And, finally, here's a report on our GNT teams, who you've been reading about over the last few months.
The Flights B and C teams both survived  the one-day Swiss Teams qualifier to start head-to-head knockout matches. Unfortunately, both teams lost their first-round matches, bringing the D4 2017 GNTs to a close.

All Nationals publish an online Daily Bulletin, where you can peruse complete results at your leisure. Check out the ACBL website for full details.

Unit 112 Clubs Slam  Alzheimer's Disease
The Canandaigua Duplicate Bridge Club and Ithaca Bridge Club made a grand slam against Alzheimer's and brain disease on June 21 when they raised a combined $6,000 for the local and national Alzheimer's Assn. The organization has designated June as Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month and "The Longest Day," is its biggest annual fundraising event.
The ACBL has also supported The Ls DeWitt Henricks, Unit 112 president. "Many of our families and friends have been adversely affected by Alzheimer's and other brain diseases. They need our support."

INSTANT MATCHPOINT GOLD POINT GAME - OCTOBER 25
The Architzel Memorial Game being held on Sunday September 24th is the famous Turkey Party held at the Central House Resort, 81 Milanville Road, Beach Lake, PA 18405. If have not been there yet, you are missing out on a great party. Sit-down dinner with turkey and ham between sessions. Cash Bar. Stratified - open - non-smoking - fragrance free. Two sessions of bridge - play one session or both. Same cost. Separate section for Intermediate/Newcomers. Partners are not guaranteed. If you need a partner, call Fay at 610-442-0742 or email [email protected] RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED and the deadline for reservations is September 20th. Registration is 11:30 AM; game starts 12:00 PM sharp.
To date, I have not heard from any Club directors who are scheduling the Instant Matchpoint game on October 25th. Let me hear from you if you are planning to hold this game as I have already had questions on who is scheduling it since it is one of the few games where gold is handed out at a club game.
The Honesdale-Hawley DBC did a superb job again this year for the fight for Alzheimer's and brain disease on the Longest Day, June 21. The club holds their game at the Senior Center in Honesdale so they cannot hold several games that day as doors close at 4 PM every game day. To compensate for this, the club holds all games for Alzheimer's the entire month of June and along with club fees and donations from club members we exceeded last year's total and contributed $1200 to the Alzheimer's Association.

BARRY GORSKI HITS THE BIG TIME!
A bridge player's journey to Platinum Life Master is long and reaching it quite an accomplishment. In late June, our own Unit 168 player, Barry Gorski, reached that major milestone! For those that have played against Barry, you've learned he was born with several abilities that give him a distinct (and might I say, unfair) advantage:
  • he has the ability to 'see through' the cards
  • he has the ability to make plays that will often bamboozle opponents into giving him an extra trick
  • he will squeeze you, end play you, or do both simultaneously!
  • he counts cards (okay - us mere mortals do try!)
  • he knows virtually every convention (whether he plays it or not)
He's a regular at the Lancaster club games and we're all better for the tough competition. Please join me in congratulating Barry!! Hey... next stop is the GRAND!

News From Harrisburg:
In addition to our regular day and evening schedule, we are featuring the following special games during the month of August.
  • 8/03: Mentor game
  • 8/05: Brunch & Bridge
  • 8/09: Wednesday evening wine & cheese game
  • 8/20: Birthday game
  • 8/23: Wednesday night Swiss
Hope to see you at the Club! We are 100% owned by our MEMBERS, and we count on your support to maintain The House of Friendship That Bridge Built.

News From Lancaster:
Special games for the month of August include:
  • Week of 8/14: Club Championship games all week - extra points!!
  • Week of 8/28: STaC games all week - silver points!!

Unit 168 works hard to keep those Gold Points coming!
For decades, Unit 168 has found ways to award Gold Points at the Club.  Since District 4 does not require Unit qualification for either GNT or NAP district finals, Units are permitted to hold a two session final, for points only.  For over a dozen years, Unit 168 GNT finals have awarded Gold points.  When ACBL changed the color, if qualification was not required (you could still run the event, for black points only), Unit 168 switched to running an NAP Unit final.

CONGRATULATIONS to the following Unit 168 members on their new master point rank achievements:

WACKY HANDS & GADGETS - by Dave Bort

Two Hearts Bust Minor Suit Stayman Keycard
In an Inter-Club Championship matchpoints game earlier this month, I was the vul dealer against non-vul opponents, when I fanned my hand to reveal this 4-loser, 23-point beauty:
East: AQ3 AJ65 K8 AKQ2

With the opponents silent, the bidding proceeded:

West             East
                      2C
2D(1)            2N(2)
3S(3)            3N(4)
4S(5)            4N(6)
6D(7)            6N(8)
Notes:
(1) Game-forcing, showing at least an Ace, a King, or 2 Queens (here also, "Two Hearts Bust", 2H = less than that, after which the 2C opener can stop in either Major at the two level, or go on)
(2) 22-24 high-card points
(3) Minor Suit Stayman
(4) Denies a 4-card minor
(5) 1430 for Diamonds (here also, 4C = 4 Clubs & 5 Diamonds, 4D = 4 Diamonds & 5 Clubs, 4H = 1430 for Clubs, 4S = 1430 for Diamonds, although there are other ways to play this)
(6) 1 or 4 keycards in Diamonds
(7) OK, we're missing a keycard - we'll stop here
(8) Well, it's matchpoints, partner (not a team game, where safety would be paramount), and I have good tenaces to receive the opening lead, so let's try this!

Partner's hand was:
West: KT7 Q QJT9643 73

Making 6, on the lead of the Spade 9, and giving up only the trump Ace. Nice that we had a way to inquire safely, without guessing and blasting into the slam.

Kokish After Drury
Here's the hand I alluded to last month, where one convention segue ways right into another. In a club matchpoints game back in May, I was dealer with both sides vulnerable, when I spread this unassuming hand:
North:  A64 K987 K96 JT2

With only a 9-loser, 11-point hand, my action seemed clear, and the auction proceeded (with the opponents silent throughout):

North             South
Pass            1H
2D(1)            3C(2)
4H(3)            Pass(4)
Notes:
(1) Reverse Two-Way Drury, showing 4+ Hearts and an invitational hand
(2) Kokish Three-Way Game Try, showing Club shortness (here also, 2H = minimum hand, no interest in game, 2S = "Is there a suit in which you would have accepted a help suit game try, partner?", 2N = Spade shortness, 3D = Diamond shortness, and 3H = "enough points for game, partner, but poor trumps - only bid game if you have good trump honors, otherwise pass!")
(3) Your Club shortness improves my hand, partner, and I have help in the other two suits, so let's do this!
(4) Yay, thanks, partner, wish me luck

Partner's hand was:
South:  Q3 AQJ63 QJT74 Q

Making 4, double-dummy, but making 5 at the table, thank you very much, at least partly due to the fact that the opponents were given fewer clues than usual, during the bidding, as to where our hands' weaknesses were.

Coming Attractions
Next month, I'll try to find an example of another cool gadget (which shall remain undisclosed until then)! So, stay tuned.
